Picked up the main game for $24 and the steel book that includes Shattered Space for $20. Definitely should have spent the money elsewhere. Anyone who paid the full $105 last fall must be feeling like they were smashed in the face with a baseball bat. Bethesda or Obsidian should have had a Fallout 5 ready to go alongside the (enormously successful) Amazon show. Dreadful brand management on Microsoft’s part. They are the Disney of video games at this point.

I really think that Bethesda should have taken a look at how Obsidian did The Outer Worlds. That game was simply amazing, and while it’s not the same formula as Starfield, the overall feel and experience in The Outer Worlds was uniquely similar to Bethesda’s open world rpg experience (with similar limitations included).

What made modders love modding the elderscrolls and fallout games is because there was a game worth modding. Starfield offers nothing compelling to be invested in enough to want to improve.

I liked it. But i also felt it wasnt worth the 30 dollars. If i hadnt bought the version of the game that came with the first DLC, i would not have bought it individually. It really doesnt feel like an expansion, it feels like a mod. It didnt even have a part of the unity.

Did they at least add new pronouns for Shattered Space? I think that is the true test of content longevity and quality.

Bethesda already clinged on Skyrim too much that they forgot their own creativity. You cannot blamed your cash cow but when the game already over, it's over, game over.

i dont think the issue is resources and manpower. the biggest issue with the game is the atrocious story. the combat is fallout 4 but better.
do a less boring level system, focus on the dungeon creation through planets, instead of rng planets, make planets fixed, but make space stations, abandoned ships, stuff like that for rnd maps.

do something like mass effect andromeda planets. with 4-5 large exploration planets(with ground vehicles), maybe add a couple of water planets.

if they want rnd planets, make them full uninhabited, or abandoned planets and moons, make them desert planets with overheat mechanics, where you have to be careful with the external temperature, or full water worlds, some dense forest worlds, with weird plants. full snow planets. that require cold protection to explore.

stuff like that.

it wouldnt be much more than the game already is(outside of the ground/water vehicle) but, like i said, the main issue is the terrible story that tries to be meta, but delivers a craptastic and completely boring non-adventure,

I’m starting to wonder if we are advancing games faster than our developers are advancing their skills or do we have too many crutches for developers to lean on and that’s diminishing their skills level? It’s very odd to me it feels like as potential for games rises our developers have an equal decline.

The older, once beloved Bethesda is long gone. Now Todd only cares about monetizing their old games with creation club content. Bethesda has become creatively bankrupt and just expects us to give them our money because they "Worked so hard" on Starfield. I have zero faith in ES6.

Bethesda is reliying on mods too much. I mean, mods are great, but if you take mods out, Bethesda games are not that great for some time now. People have fun with those games, because they have fun with mods, not with games by themself. Skyrim was like that, F4 was like that. Starfield just showed us how it is to play Bethesda game without mods.

And I'm sorry, but the fact devs worked hard on that game and DLC means nothing for quality. You can work on something 30 years and it can turn out bad. Hard work is not a value in itself when it comes to art. I'm sure they did worked very, very hard and nobody is saying otherwise. Also, the fact some experienced people worked on that DLC, again - doesn't mean a thing. You can work in some field for your whole life, you last project could even be a masterpiece - that doesn't mean your next project can't be shit. It can.

I really hope Starfield will be a lesson for Bethesda, but I don't know... I have hope, but we saw that exact scenario so many times.

Let’s face it, the fact that nothing seems to give, (I.e from bad reviews, previous bomb release of 76, continuous usage of the Creation engine with no improvements on game quality, poor direction in Shattered Space DLC, did I mention they released Skyrim again on the Tesla car? Jk and etc) Bethesda Game studios will never do anything better. They are done. They are in it for your money, the community that funds them backs them up, so they can care less. This constant war for a better game and an Elder 6 will never happen because they will never change. War never changes.

"Most of the quests and levels were done by designers who have worked on previous games and DLCs, goilg all the way back to Morrowind" - well while being technically correct it isnt true in the output. All the named main writers from Morrowind - left the company long ago, it may happen Pagliarulo is the only one somehow known and involved of the few who remained (and a fun fact - he started working during bloodmoon, not the morrowind itself), and other may be previous "prop placers" - interns and other low involvement devs.

I wouldn't say its a drop in content or design, for me it's just rampant stagnation. The game's core design and how you interact with the world and mechanics (except spaceflight and space combat) fundamentally hasn't been significantly changed or iterated on since Skyrim or even the earlier Fallout titles like NV.

In order to actually play Shattered Space you are forced to join a religious cult. Even if you say "well my character is just pretending to join them", you are still forced to make that choice. There is no other way to play the DLC. Screw that. Players should have had an alternate path, rather than join a religion that has been actively trying to kill them for the past year.

Maybe playing a new Bethesda game finally showed everyone that they only kept playing Skyrim because of nostalgia, same with Fallout, and that neither were actually particularly well made. Starfield just showed them all the issues that Skyrim and Fallout had, with a new game they weren't already attached to, and they didn't like it anymore. Now the bugs weren't just accepted because it was a twelve year old game, that somehow never got those bugs fixed during any of the 17 re-releases.

If Bethesda really were trying their hardest, after being in development for eight fucking years, Starfield would have had a truly immersive story, it would have had good NPCs, good gunplay, let you fly your own ship and land it yourself either in a hangar or on a pad, let you land anywhere you want and procedurally generate the environment around you, and it would have had a much better ending than "Oh, you're the Dragon--I mean, Star born!"
