The biggest problem people face when buying a new car, is buying a new car. New cars, specifically, any car or truck newer than 2003, is garbage. I've been a master certified tech for over 35 years, and I will never buy a vehicle newer than a 2003, UNLESS I plan on gutting it and using the chassis to host an older Chevy small block, lt or LS . I drive a highly modified 1995 Saturn sw2 doch 5 speed manual as my daily in the summer, and a 2002 Chevy ZR2 , 4.3l 5 speed manual as my winter ride. Which by the way, hosts an engine that should of made this list as the 4.3 easily lives to over 500k miles with regular oil changes.

The Datsun/Nissan L series engines were extremely reliable....if you torqued the head bolts every 10 to 15K miles and rebuilt the carb every 2 to 3 years. The head was aluminum and mounted on a closed deck cast iron block. I found them to be indestructible, as well as the manual transmissions fitted to them. The L-18 version in my 610 Datsun had a dual point distributor fed by a Delta Mark 10B capacitive discharge unit and got 39 mpg on my intestate highway commute to work. The 105 hp rating was more than adequate.

I have a 2004 hyundai elantra with over 336,000 miles on it and it still runs great. It looks like hell for the faded paint, bings and hazed headlights, but it's the best long lasting stardard transmission (5 speed) I ever had next to the Chrysler slant 6 I use to own when I was a teenager. In fact, due to the cost of car repairs these days, I am only interested in buying one of these older cars with such engines. I'm sinck of all these newer cars with all the bells and whistles. They can keep all that shit. So much more can go wrong with them.
