You've shown a 10" tread with an overhang, but cut 10"'s. Hmmmm.

Brilliant. I've built a couple of decks and used pre cut stringers but they don't always fit. This way guarantees they will.

Thank you for the video. I was trying to find some 7 step pre made stringers and was unable to find them in wood, so this will make it super easy to make them myself. Thank you again.

Great video. Kinda funny… in 2021 a piece of scrap plywood costs more than a 2x12 😂

Anyone know what to do when you need a stringer longer than 12 feet? My original deck was built with a very long one-piece stringer than is longer than 12 feet. Where the builder obtained it, I have no idea. As a non-professional (without access to pro-contractor supplies) I still haven't been able to locate an appropriate board for a stringer, longer than 12 feet.

Why did you have your first tread level with your deck. This would look wrong. Is that why it's not shown on the footage?

Great vid. One thing more I was looking for was the width of the board used. I googled it and found you need to have at least a 3.5" throat, meaning the distance from the bottom edge of the stringer to the notch. So, a 2x10 might work but 2x12 is better.

The stringer is holding up my project up. I have had a mental block but you went slow and made it so I can understand. BTW you are the ONLY carpenter out of many how to videos who explained the top tread. You did this by simply stating “leave enough for the top tread.” Thank you.👍

I'm working on a set of steps and it has become a real chore. your the easiest I seen on an explanation, but I was watching video and tread was 10 inches but you measured the run at ten. but the finish tread was overhange for a noise. what changed the run or the tread in length. My steps are in a basement, so I have an 80" clearence issue.floor to floor is 94" horizontal run is 102" neighbors house has 11 steps How would you calculate this, so you have a 80" head clearence, at the bottom step?

Nice tutorial! I do have a question though, I’ve watched many videos and most draw the lines on the outside of the square, you draw them on the inside. Doesn’t that change the run and rise?

the deck he's showing here has 5/4 board rather than the 1.5" thick steps he is planning for. guessing u'd want to keep the same style decking boards throughout.

I marked and cut my first set today doing a deck remodel. I had helped my boss with a stair set last summer so I had an idea of the process, but was nervous to do it on my own job. I wanted to make sure the job was done right. Thanks for the knowledge, I'll use it the rest of my life.

I was mentally challenged at this due to tbi's I've had. So I went to the store bought a stringer that met code and some stock lumber that would meet code and traced the stringer that met my rise and tread. I poured a platform to have a solid base and bolted a cross bar at the base and knotched my stringer bottom to catch that bottom bar to prevent hopefully from ever losing integrity. Without this video I wouldn't have even thought to do that so thanks for recommending practicing and tracing. Utilized it to match my needs. Soon will be installing the treads. I used simpson hangers and rated screws. Made it much easier for me.

YOU ARE HIRED

I live in Rancho Cucamonga California.
Come on over and build my steps and landing. It’s only a 4 step, little job. The existing steps got written up (I swear to you that I didn’t build them 20 years ago)
You see,,, here’s the deal, I wanna go play Pickleball at the park. It’s not that I’m lazy but I don’t wanna go to Home Depot to buy the stuff then load & unload the stuff.
When shall I expect you to arrive?
Don’t worry I already have a hand saw and one of those things for hitting the nails down.

Yours Truly

I'm replacing three old stringers and the top step does not come flush with the deck, it starts down an entire step. Because of this, I have to build a skookum header out of 2X10 material. My challenge is the run measurement. I'm using two - 5/4" X6 decking pieces for the treads. I'm trying to do all the measuring myself instead of just tracing the old stringers because they are not that accurate. To know where to measure from and to is where the math doesn't add up.
