Ground Report | What happened to Sonam & Raja Raghuvanshi in Sohra?

Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi, a couple from Indore, visited Sohra in Meghalaya on May 22. They were last seen on May 23. EastMojo spoke to local guides and a parking lot in-charge to understand what could have happened during their visit.

Bhakupar Wansai, a local guide, said he met the couple at around 3:00–3:30 pm on May 22. He offered them his services and Sonam agreed. He said he dropped them off at a homestay in Nongriat and was told they would stay the night. When he asked if they needed a pickup for the next day, Sonam declined.

On May 23, Albert, another local guide, said he saw the couple on their way back up from the trek at around 10 am. They were accompanied by three male tourists. He recalled that Raja was walking with the three men, while Sonam was behind, walking slowly. He said the group was speaking in Hindi, which he could not understand.

Albert added that he did not notice anything suspicious at the time but said Sonam looked tired, which was expected after a long trek.

Wanbha Mohali, the parking in-charge at Mawlakhiat, said he did not notice who collected the scooter on May 23 as the parking lot was crowded. He said the three men who arrived came on a bike, but he could not recall the registration number. He also shared that after the incident, tourism in the area has gone down.

Locals expressed sadness over how Sohra is being portrayed. They said that the region has not seen such incidents before and they have always welcomed tourists with respect.

The couple’s scooter was later found in Sohrarim, and Raja’s body was recovered near Weisawdong. The search for Sonam is ongoing.
