I was a superintendent on a strip mine. I have ran the D11,994k, 993K and 797 haul truck. They have definitely become more user friendly than years ago.

My son (now 53 years) is a finish blade operator. Has been since 2005. Started out on Case back-hoes, then scrapers right out of high school. His interest grew from when he was a child with Tonka trucks, cranes and dozers. His daddy (me) worked for Arizona's Caterpillar dealer (Empire Machinery. Co.) back then and I'd take him to see the big stuff. Back then in the mid 60's diesel engines had pony motors and no protective cabs over the operator. Cabs were an optional accessory. Dozer front blades were lifted with steel cables on a big spool and lowered by gravity and their own weight. Technology is mind blowing and awesome.

The 994K is now renamed as the 995 for some reason that only Cat knows.

I believe Caterpillar makes awesome and necessary equipment, ,however the excessive use of the words environmentally friendly in this video does not work for me. Some of the huge scale capabilities have big environmental impacts. Some maybe good some bad. Not always friendly. If the efficiency of the machine requires more environmental impact than obvious to produce and power.

A Cummins powerplant in a Caterpillar excavator? That's strange to say the least.

We had a 9u D6 from the 40s. It had a cable operated blade. I loved that old dog. I got to drive it when i was 12yr old. And then on.

I started my career as an operator in 1965, operating almost every piece of mobile equipment built.
That's a big claim and I'm proud of it.
Mostly in mining and construction. Army engineer for three years.
Then finished as a Trainer/Assessor and senior site manager in the black coal industry.
Why do we have to get old and wear out ?
Now retired an miss the equipment.
