It's bizarre seeing so many emperors who desperately needed legitimate heirs not have sons. I suppose this is why the Chinese imperial system was so much more stable--lots of concubines ensured that the Chinese emperor would have at least ONE legitimate son so that the succession would be more predictable and stable. And to nip in the bud the possibility of constant assassinations of unpopular emperors. There was so much murdering going on here! Jeez! (I'm also not saying the Chinese system was clean of murdering--far from it. Just that the murdering was concentrated among ruthless concubines competing with each other to see which of their sons ascended the throne. The murder of sitting Chinese emperors was thus comparatively rare.)

I’m truly interested in the answer to this question: how did the citizens of Rome keep up with this stuff? Did it matter to their day to day life? Some of them must have lived thru 15-20 emperors.

I've always thought that the 5 Good Emperors didn't adopt worhty successors because they nobly tried to pick the best candidate for the job, but simply because none of them had surviving biological sons. I 100% Trajan would have happily made his son the next emperor, if only he'd had one. And in fact, notice what happens as soon as one of the 5 Good Emperors DID have a legitimate biological son: he named him the next emperor (Marcus Auelius and Commodus).

They are called "Claudian" because 4 out of the first five emperors descend from the Wife of Augustus, Livia Augusta ... Who, herself was a 'Claudian', because of her illustrious ancestor, an earlier noble Claudius.

Persian, Indian and Chinese Empires had way more smooth succession(son succeeding father or brother succeeding brother) than this. This is literally giving headache.
