The Viking Rune stones of Sweden

It's amazing to think that people have been looking at these stones for a thousand years and just thinking wow. It takes more than a nimbwit black metal musician to eradicate these!

Thank you so much for the wonderful tour! So true about the occasional disregard for ancient burial grounds…late one afternoon In 1985, I was walking by a very old church in the old walled town of Visby, Gotland, and saw that a back-hoe tractor was being used to hack a deep pipe-channel of some sort, right through a cobblestone car park within the churchyard, just a few short meters away from the church building itself...curious to get a look at the soil being brought up, I noticed human bones scattered throughout the soil...the operator of the machine noticed my interest and alarm and said "you think those bones are interesting, look at THIS" as he pointed out what looked to be a stone slab-lined AD 9oo's type of grave that his tractor scoop had transected, it had just gouged right through the center of it...when I asked him why archaeologists were not on the spot, he gave a Gallic shrug [Nordic shrug won't describe it here] and stated that "this stuff is EVERYWHERE here, if we had to do it that way, nothing would get done!"
I hope there is proper archaeological protocol in place now!

sweden reminds me of New Hampshire / Nermont in New England, USA.

The animal might be some kind of elk or deer. It seems to have some anylrtd.

The reason behind the higher sea levels back then was bedcause the melted glaciers had not had much time to allow the land below them to rebound upwards now that the weight of the ice cap was gone. In fact all the lands in Europe and North America are still rebounding upwards since the loss of the ice, So in another 1,000 years the lands will be even higher than they are now, though climate change may raise the sea levels even higher than they are now even with the land uplift,

I found out yesterday my Irish surname(Sweeney) possibly came from a variation of “Sven”.

Makes you wonder how many rune stones there are to be discovered still. Curious if you ever use paper and charcoal or chalk to make impressions of the stones. I think the animal is a dog maybe the father was particularly fond of or perhaps a wolf but it does look more dog like. Then again not knowing the ability of maker it might not be that accurate a depiction. I will check on rune stones along the great lakes in America and up in Minnesota Vinland as they called it.

Enjoying your videos don't worry about apologizing when you make little mistakes in English you speak it very well and 100% better then most of us speak Swedish.

After loving the series Vikings, I visited Sweden and Norway in 2019 And again 2020...I'm from East Africa but have lots of respect of the Nordic culture and history. The people are also amazing, kinda shy, polite and found most down to earth..
I visited Västerhaninge...so nice to see this video.

Part of my family is Swedish, my 2x great grandparents on my dads mother side came to America from Sweden. Would love to go to Sweden one day and learn more of that side of my family, and more about Swedish history and culture
