Rinchenpong is a town located in West Sikkim, India, notable for its historical significance and natural beauty. The area is home to the Rinchenpong Monastery, established in 1730 by the Ngadakpa Lama, making it the third oldest monastery in Sikkim. Initially housing around 98 lamas, the monastery is renowned for its rare Ati Buddha statue, depicted in the Yab-Yum position, symbolizing the union of male and female energies in Buddhism. This site not only serves as a spiritual center but also attracts tourists for its panoramic views and cultural heritage, nestled amidst lush green mountains at an altitude of 1,700 meters (5,500 feet) above sea level.|
Historically, Rinchenpong has been significant due to its strategic location, which was the site of a battle between the forces of the Chogyal (King) of Sikkim and British invaders. The local Lepcha tribesmen famously poisoned the only water source, a lake known as Poison Pokhri, resulting in heavy casualties for the British forces and ultimately halting their invasion. This event is commemorated in local lore, with the lake still referred to as bikh-pokhri, or poisoned lake. The town's rich history, combined with its cultural landmarks like the Rinchenpong Monastery, makes it a unique destination in Sikkim.
