Update: After making this video, I decided to try some faster oscillators on this board. Unbelievably, it seems to run perfectly stable with a 36mhz oscillator installed! (CPU running at 18mhz) I tried a 40mhz oscillator but it would no longer POST. Now remember I am using these possible "fake" and rebadged Harris 286 chips. They claim to be 20Mhz, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are 16mhz parts so that could be why it's not running them at a full 20Mhz. It could also be the components on the Breakthru 286 board. Either way, it's running the board more than double the original speed this board was designed to run it. I tried some more games including Silpheed and Prince of Persia, and they run smoothly, a noticeable improvement over the 12mhz I showed off in this video, and miles ahead of how they would run on a stock 4.77Mhz 8088. This card continues to impress!
ОтветитьThat is amazing how it brought that system to life! back in the day I had no idea about that upgrade. My dad would have let me get it for sure. I really enjoyed this video!
ОтветитьPlease obtain and use some FPUs in these reviews. Thank. you.
ОтветитьSpeaking of Lucid, I have a Casio, B.O.S.S. handheld business system, that is a mini computer in a 3" x 7" case, that contained a contact list program, business organizer, a database program, and a Lucid Spreadsheet, all in ROM. It was fast for it's day, and ran on 2 AA batteries, with a 2032 coin battery backup. It has 128K of RAM, and is in a sleek carrying case. A great little unit.
ОтветитьKind of a bummer you didn't bother with the 80287.
ОтветитьMan I can remember all through the 90s waiting for the next "computer shopper" mag to come out back when I was still in school. Right there in front at K mart as you walked in the front door where I was, I'd spend hours looking through that and comparing prices and dreaming up a machine I could never afford. I started on old IBM XTs PCATs and clones back in elementary school, they got em and no one knew how to use them and I was able to figure them out and get out of lots and lots of classes I hated to go work on library computers it was awesome.
ОтветитьI see you've unlocked grandma mode for Outrun. Nice!
ОтветитьWould it work if you put a processor 386 or even a Pentium in the place of the processor ? Curious on what would happen..
ОтветитьWhat about a new version of that card with a A10 7800K on it and 32GB of DDR3 RAM and a HDMI out to connect to a monitor.
ОтветитьLandmark Research International Corporation had a local area code to me. So I did an research and they existed in Sarasota, Florida until they were acquired by Quarterdeck, who were almost immediately acquired by Symantec in 1990.
Fun Fact: Sarasota changed area codes from 813 to 941 in 1995.
I do remember Lucid 3-D, but never used it. Ran Lotus 1-2-3 in office and As-Easy-As at home.
ОтветитьA lil bit late😂
ОтветитьI cant explain why but ive watched this twice and i just love it . top video
ОтветитьI'd love to have one of those for my Commodore Colt, vs an NEC V20, looks much faster and more compatible with later softwares
Ответитьyou know what i've always wanted to see? one of these 286 upgrade cards with a 286 to 386 upgrade and maybe a 386 to 486 upgrade all connected together would that even work? same goes for older mac cpus would be funny to stack upgrades.
ОтветитьIt's probably disabled on boot so that if you end up in a situation where the system isn't working, you can reboot it and it'll fix itself.
ОтветитьI have one of these with the original box, I love it. I had to build a cable for it but it works great on my 5155 portable. Especially the small form factor!
ОтветитьI worked for a AMI (not the bios mfg), we designed drop in boards to update military PC's from 286 to 386. The next company I worked for was Extend Micro, and it was similar, but 386 to 486, and mostly on MCA (micro channel architecture) or also called ps/2. They were a pita to troubleshoot to component level.
Ответитьشكرا جزيلا على الفيديو جزاك الله الجزاء
ОтветитьMy first pc was an apple IIgs in 1991
ОтветитьWas the goal 60fps back then or 24fps
Ответитьhate it when people use the feds outright lies about inflation numbers.. Big Mac in 1981 was 99c, now it's $8 (and 40% smaller, but well ignore that for now) , $6k in 1981 is about $48,000 today with more realistic inflation numbers that reflect just how much the occupation has stolen from us.
ОтветитьI wasn't aware that these boards existed back in the days of the 286. Very impressive! Not the same thing I know, but I was totally blown away when I added a third-party maths copro to my home built 386DX40 system and saw speed improvements of up to 100x in a Mandelbrot generator that was popular at the time. Happy days! 😀
ОтветитьI have a very similar card in my 5150 - got the machine from the recycling and it had that hidden surprise in it!
ОтветитьMost important question: can it run crysis on full hd with full details? Yes - with 0.000000000001 FPS.
Ответитьi wonder if it would post with the old kingston 286 to 386 upgrade cpu in place of the 286 on that board. I once had a rare 286 to 486 that i pulled out of a unisys thin net terminal
ОтветитьWas around silicone valley in the 80s i used to go to a place called weird stuff warehouse. You could see some strange stuff . I bought a portable case had 6 inch orange screen and keyboard in the lid. I can't remember the specs but it had 86 processor and room for a hard disk and had slot for floppy drive. Had it just about luggable around the city of London. I remember the rabid rabbit logo .
ОтветитьI had a NEC V-20.......at 20 mhz......... and that was just one processor, no card, no extra, while everyone was at 4-12 mhz those days.
Ответитьif memory serves me correct, they also made a 286 to 386 as well. Cuz I was thinking about purchasing one of these upgrade ISA cards way back during the mid 90's when I still had my 286 PC. I refrained instead to just buying a 386DX.
ОтветитьIn 1989, my father took me to the shady end of town where he paid a Chinese woman for my first PC. I was nervous being my first time and I didn't even get a hard disk drive. But a few months later, I got an 80 (!!!) Megabyte hard drive and the rest was history.
ОтветитьThis is bogus, I think you're working for PCSG. They're not getting my money now...
ОтветитьMy first thought was what would happen if you plugged it into a 286 would you get a dual 286 cpu configuration. Then you brought out the cable and my thoughts were dashed.
Ответитьdidnt lucid 3d merge with 3dfx ?
ОтветитьGet a floating point unit and thise games will scream. I put an 8087 in my 8088 and both of the ran great.
ОтветитьRecently i had to try to de-solder an ATX connector with no success any tips for that? I used a de-solder gun I even tried to put some low temp solder and suck that out but its in there hard.
ОтветитьAmazing board, very small package for what it offers. Very impressive features and performance. I guess the smug marketing was warranted after all.
ОтветитьAdrian, can you document the board and release the schematic for the rest of us hobbyists?
ОтветитьI thought this video was going to be about the worst raspberry pi 5 extension board ever.
ОтветитьLol, Lucid 3-D was PCSG's own spreadsheet software.
ОтветитьI remember buying a 486-DX4-100 and motherboard combo for $299 in the late 90's at Fry's Electronics in Sunnyvale, CA.
ОтветитьHave you tried a maths co-processor on it at all?
ОтветитьThat is impressive. I would have loved to have one back in the day. Do you have a website or list of hardware that you are looking to get your hands on? I am a computer packrat and I have a ton of old stuff. I would be happy to donate things to you if you would enjoy it. I'd rather see it go to someone that cares about it than to throw it out.
ОтветитьMy XT 286 Upgrade is a fully loaded setup but my 286 card has a Switch on the Card slot edge.....
ОтветитьI pretty much skipped the 8086 and 286 until a few years ago, when I got obsessed with the PC88VA series after getting a VA3 model. The VA series had an interesting/unique processor that was both Z80 compatible and 8086 compatible, NEC was trying to bridge the gap between the PC88 line and the early PC98 line I think. I've since collected more PC88 and PC98's than I should, but being in Japan part of the year while staying at my friend/work partner's place and having her basically buy any that pop up in shops for a reasonable price has led to a decent collection of the different models/variations. I still love the VA3; being able to mess around with both Z80 and 8086 on the same system without it being some kind of daughter board like the Z80 boards is fun on top of the VA3's graphic modes.
ОтветитьThank you 💗
ОтветитьThat turtle rabbit with his dull rainbow crash helmet is so 80's !
ОтветитьAdding a soundcard would actually cripple all that boost almost back to stock speed.
Ответитьa common method of overclocking up into the 486 era was changing the system clock ;)
