I think you need to have an extended process, and a few pinholes in the front.

I think you need to stretch the canvas on the front side already, using needles to create the smallest holes possible, that get filled with gesso later.

Then carefully not stretching too much lay the canvas around the edges.
Although the opposite might be true... Canvas is cross stitched (?) so you might need to bend it, then lay it around...

Maybe gesso 1 layer first before taking out the needles on the front.

Also like many mentioned, and you tried, use water and heat from a iron. Or hot steam, really let the heat get in there. When bending wood, they let it sit for hours and hours.

Also don't try to go with these extreme inverted curves from the get go, work your way up, get a feel for the fabric.

This really is a doozie 😅

Anyways, best of luck, love you and your art.

I wonder if you stretch the canvas fabric on the bias instead of with the regular grain of the fabric. The bias of the fabric (putting it on a diagonal) has a lot more stretch

🤔 perhaps a different fabric choice, polyester canvas or just something more stretchy than cotton! OR Ooh take the canvas and frame to a large vacuum forming machine and let the heat and pressure mold it perfectly to the shape. 😅

Have you tried using linen instead of cotton canvas?? Linen is much more pliable and would be easier to work into the curves of your shape. Obviously it's a more expensive option, but I think it would work MUCH better with what you're doing. I'm also a seamstress, and as others have said, we make ample use of cuts to have fabric lay flat when creating curves. Personally, I would try this project with linen, it will be much more forgiving with the curves than stiff cotton canvas.

Well Mr Angelo, or should I call you Michael? Why not just go for an organic shape like a circle or an oval? In my humble opinion, that would make your paintings even more incredible. These odd shapes don't match your impeccable paintings.

I don't know about the wrapping thing but about the warping, for woodwork people use metal, like c channels, for example, to stabilize the wood and prevent it from warping. But, it would also add to the weight, so idk haha
Loved the channel, beautiful painting, subscribed.

Embroidery frame idea, but the second frame will have have to stay around the formed canvas. You have that frame, and then another frame with the same form, but a few mm larger, cut material and push frame down, get assistants to help, you could use, heatgun to secure some places, push frame down around and in place. The frame will give a neat appearance. Could work.

Looks Great. I think the pond effect it adds for that painting is really interesting and its always good to try something new. The whole video about trying to get the canvas right had me laughing my head off as I can feel your frustration - love it. The local Hobby-craft here in the UK has started selling unusual shaped canvases - must be the new trend - perhaps strengthened by your own experimentation into this. Cheers and more videos please…..

Trying to invent tailoring and dress-making on your own, yes, a problem. No, not impossible. Artists can and do use solid, cradled panels in large sizes. Framers generally know about adhering large things to large supports, which, yes, takes both technique and practice.

What I would do to try:

- find/make a device that stretches the canvas only/alone, evenly in all diagonal directions,
- then take that custom frame (yours), spread glue on all the edges of the front side and stick it on the stretched canvas (while still stretching),
- wait for it to dry and then no matter how I stretch the canvas along the curved frame, its face itself will not be wrinkled, but smooth.
- Then I'll cut a thin and long strip of the same material as the canvas and glue it as a kant for all the side edges to cover all imperfections.

That's it. And I'm sure it will work.

Again with Prompting AI ? Why do u film yourself making it seem like you drawn on the canvas (when clearly its been traced with a projector) dont get me wrong using a projector with your own sketch is fine . But I think you know that showing yourself tracing an Ai prompt would be very shameful. You have great techniques, but dont uniquely rely on it. Put some of your soul into it and create from scratch, thats where a unique style will show.

Stretch the canvas square on a larger frame, and apply adhesive to the curved frame and press it to the tensioned canvas, then when the glue dries, trim and stretch the excess around the back of the curved frame. Another option is a large piece of foam board insulation with canvas applied to the surface

I do think it’s nice to have.. it’s not a must. It looks cool, some of the shapes aren’t super attractive though and like you mentioned, your first pieces didn’t really interact with the shapes much. I think it’s very cool that you made this idea possible though and executed it so well but maybe you don’t really need to go much bigger than this particular size to explore this concept further. I’ve explored irregular size frames before as well and although it’s fun, at the end of the day, none of us are really mad at rectangular paintings. It’s not really the point, the point is the content of the painting. So it’s kind of like yea you can do it but it’s not a huge payoff. Either way, super well done and it’s awesome that you accomplished it and it came out that clean!

I used to work in Orthotics (medical braces) and we had to use leather for pads and straps. I found that using pigskin leather was quite good for stretching around shapes. You would wet it first, staple on one side the stretch it to the other etc. Try a test one that is smaller to see if will conform to your shapes. From what I recall pigskin seems to stretch in all directions

So two thoughts. Firstly try making the unavoidable folds neatly and evenly so they become a feature of the canvas, to give it almost an origami feel. Secondly, stretch the canvas with wrinkles and all (as long as the face is flat), and place a binding strip over the outside of the frame. This method could use visible tacks as a feature or almost invisible pins. I personally don’t think the bubbly frame really adds to your artwork, but that’s the whole point, it’s YOUR artwork.

Instinctively my thoughts are of little use, but one would need to develop a synthetic canvas that you can somewhat loosely fit, and then heat shrink to the frame. Does such a material exist that could be used for this particular job? No idea (highly likely not) - I mean, they vinyl wrap cars. If a company would co-devleop a simialr material with a finish reminiscent of canvas.... - but that's my 2 cents, useless or not. Lovely work as always Alpay.

You could use a solid wood panel if the back was routed out to reduce the weight. It would also be less likely to warp. The edges would be seamless. This is a lot of work for your carpenter.
An easier way would be to use thin plywood with a built up edge like the ones you used already and fill and smooth any defects on the edge.

Alpay, what comes to mind is that you let the edges look like shit, but fill the seams, cuts, and folds and sand them down. With something like a milliput or a two part epoxy.

you can create your canvas shape and create an outer shape with the same curves, like when you outline a shape in illustrator for example in which you use a command that outgrows your design, and then use that as a frame in where you press your canvas with the fabric, just the same way is done for tambourines, you know, you put the outer shape as a guide and then lay your canvas fabric wet on top and take your final canvas frame and press against it pulling from different sides to even out any wrinkles and creases, fix the canvas with the usual nails and let it dry and take out the outer shape, the outer frame, is like pressing into a shape cutter, I don't know if you know what it mean, I hope is a good idea and you can finally get it the way you want, great paintings bu the way!

a strip of cloth the width of the wooden frame can surround the entire lateral extension of said irregular frame. This strip of cloth will be glued (a very attenuated glue such as PVA dissolved in plenty of water) along the side of the canvas and can span above the edge, say, ±0.5cm.
Another piece of cloth will be glued over the useful area of the canvas and then cut following the edges (and, consequently, the design) of your canvas frame, but also with a small span left over - such spans are for later sewing.
Now that you have 2 pieces of cloth that fit perfectly, you can:

1) sew the two together with a fine finish made by a manual sewing machine. the seam will be visible on the outside.

2) the excess of the 2 pieces of cloth will be marked along their meeting point. both will be folded inwards and sewn on the inside and there will be no visible seam. this cover, finally, will be put back on the wooden frame and finally glued definitively.

3) (much more laborious) join the two pieces of fabric by means of fabric restoration (thread by thread) - if this joint is done well it will be imperceptible

4) Another possibility using just one piece of fabric is to glue the fabric already cut in a shape similar to the area of the wooden frame and, obviously, there will be folds of excess fabric along the sides. Glue the sides like this and leave the fabric folds. Where there are such folds of fabric, cut them very tightly and glue the entire fabric to the sides. When you finish off the entire work with plaster/acrylic, for example, most likely nothing will be visible

I think what you’re trying to achieve is possible, but not with the materials you’re using. You can get a good canvas-like texture on a smooth panel by cross-crossing layers of gesso without sanding between. Look at Dibond for a shapeable, lightweight, archival support.
