Dmytro Komarov will climb the legendary Chimborazo volcano to uncover the secrets of the ancient and nearly extinct profession of ice miners. All that for a try to change the life of the last ice miner in history. During the 9th episode, Dmytro Komarov got acquainted with the national hero of Ecuador, 77-year-old Baltaraz Ushca, who was an ice miner in the Andes for decades. As recently as 30 years ago, the ice mining profession was common in these places. They climbed the Chimborazo volcano, manually chipped off chunks of thousands-year-old ice, brought the blocks down on donkeys, and sold them to locals. For the nearby cities this ice was indispensable for storing food. But with the advent of refrigerators ice mining became unnecessary.
Today, Balthazar Ushca is the only one left of an entire generation of ice miners. All his life he climbed daily to a great height for crystal clear ice, and now he tells about his profession to the younger generation. Age takes its toll, and Balthasar can't climb mountains often. His family helps him, and they still produce some ice for sale. Today it is only bought in small quantities by cocktail makers, and the Ushca family are struggling.
