We could easily have done so after WWII if we wanted to. The danger for the world that neither one of these so called experts understand, is that the US public is sick of sacrificing for an ungrateful world. The danger is that the US withdraw to our own borders, stop all foreign and military aid, be more prosperous than ever, stop disadvantageous trade, be energy independent, and let the tyrants of the world do as they will as long as they dont threaten us directly. Dont think that’s realistic in this global trade era? Think again, the US alone has the raw materials, intellect, resources and industrial and military might to simply withdraw to its own borders and let the world fend for itself. In fact the US would undoubtedly prosper even more. It nearly happened in WWI and WWII but we wisely took a stand. Listening to these two, I now wonder why.

In this sense, it is no surprise that the largest expenditure of the USA is the military budget, because it is the only way to maintain world supremacy and the high standard of living of Americans, which is not based on economic performance. Military expenditure (% of GDP) in United States was reported at 3.4549 % in 2022 which means by leaps and bounds the highest military budget in the world. And why? Does the USA feel threatened by Mexico, Canada...? No, the USA needs this budget to maintain its hegemony and rob the rest of the world in order to get cheap natural resources and especially oil. US aircraft carriers are not in such numbers in all the seas of the world due to tourist trips, that's for sure...

It’s a well known historical fact that China has never in history try to take over another country or try to dominate another region. They have fought civil wars and some against their neighbors, but never against another country with the intention to conquer and take over. I really believe they prioritize improving their own country and wellbeing of their people, and not trying to bring another country down. If the US push them to their limit, they might actually start to retaliate and that will not look good for the world and humankind

When Mearsheimer speaks of "US security," he means "US hegemony." He's afflicted with the Anglo-Saxon delusional belief that they have an inviolable right to forever rule the world.

The fact that they can’t see that the great agricultural areas like Europe, Eastern China, South Asia, the Eastern US etc. need to be regional hegemonies to defend their citizens which will each be in the billions at some point is alarming. Huge fertile regions are the sources of GDP majorities in their regions and each separately must rule their areas, whether directly or indirectly. That is the only way to balance the field of eight players.

I'm a huge fan of both of these men! However, in this discussion i have to totally side with Jeffrey Sachs. You can talk about the oceans that separate us, but this world is a small planet getting smaller by the day. We need to stop thinking of others as rivals and star thinking as fellow humans that share the same planet. No one power has the right to rule the rest of us and the planet. By doing this, we can stop spending all of our effort and time on weapons of war and start spending those resources on making this planet a better place to live.

How can you demonstrate the unprecedented military build up that China has pursued over the past 5-10 years and not perceive China as a threat? If there not a threat then why have they hacked so many plans of high end flight, missile and ground force weapons systems in all the major military branches. To the economist on the panel I would say, “the greatest deception men suffer from is their own opinions.”
