Make a Dex save at disadvantage to dodge the fireball while you're prone and in your shell.
(also being prone gives melee attackers advantage, terrible idea)

Now I kinda want to make a character that's entire purpose is to become a living shield.

Im all up for being clever and all. But if my players did this, id slowly walk over, slap them, then lean down to be face to face with them and ask why they hate me so. Cuz this is just moronic to balance around, straight up

idea for a magic item: a bow that only deals 1 piercing damage, but is guaranteed to hit.
the damage of the bow cannot be changed, not even by the wish spell.

you can, however, use bomb arrows to cause explosions upon impact, but the explosion also deals one damage.
same with every other alteration to the bow.

using an arrow of death causes the bow to partially lose its magic, transorming the guarantee hit into advantage.

You can a passive 30 or 31 AC with 10 or so levels in armorer artificer, 1 level in fighter, plate armor, a shield and an animated shield or second shield because shields only take 1 arm, and than dual wielding feat I think (the one with +1 AC when dual wielding)

Forge Clerics have Blessing of the forge at lvl 1 letting them give any armor or weapon a +1. Meaning you can put a +1 on that shield and get 31 ac.

As the DM I'd just be like fine. well done you have have 30 AC but can't take any actions, all the enemies are just going to ignore you and fight your friends while you sit there and do nothing.

I'm not sure if you can actively use shield being in shell but seems legit

I feel like my DM might travel to my house to deck me if I did this. He already doesn't like some of the stuff I find here XD.

This is why we should look at passive ac. The constant ac you have without using any resources or taking any actions. This is what I call nova ac, where its the max ac in one turn even if it doesn't allow anything else to be done

idk about not getting hit cause my dm threw a boss with a +19 to the hit die

Your enemies surround you and wait for you to do the only thing you can do, emerge. Then they all hit you with their prepared actions at advantage, and they will because with no longer having the shell defense or the 3/4 cover you will only be at 21 AC.

Not me making a tortle forgemaster NPC who was once a Forge Cleric with a tower shield (which can provide 3/4 cover) and a spear for my campaign, heheheeee

My DM would be like:
-Roll Dex Save for oncoming Sacred Flame.

As a DM. I don't think I'd allow a player to hide in their shell and still add their shield AC as if it's raised :P

Huh, I guess it doesn't say it explicitly but I'd make them drop anything they were holding in their hands if they use the Shell Defense. It is implied they are fully going into their shell because it drops them prone. And if they insist it is possible cause they just hold the handle of the shield as it sits flat against the opening I would make them roll to see if they get tilted and roll onto their back due to the shield tipping them over as they fall prone. And they better hope they weren't on a hill when they did this.

I’d consider you being in your shell as being in full cover -hence the bonus to AC. Any DM should make the ruling, not that it changes much because hiding in your shell makes you useless.

Don't see how your dragging a shield into the shell I'm walking up to you if your hiding behind a object now that you prone I just don't see like half of this being viable unfortunately

Creatures will have advantage against you, since the Retreat makes you prone. I don’t really get why, but it does

DMs response: the enemy uses breath attack directly into your shell so I'm gonna give you disadvantage on your dex save to get out of the way

ah yes. I will conveniently find 3/4 cover and sit in shell defense the entire combat

And at level 2 multiclass into fighter until lv 4 then get battlemaster and do taunting attack

Get in your shell for your ridiulous AC.
Control the bear telephatically to attack your enemies.
Once it;s done, just pop your head back out.

Wouldn't you be unable to hold a shield if you retreated into your shell? I know you're still practically invincible, but is there any way around this?

Jeez, and here I was feeling pretty good making the DM mad that I wanted to be a Warforged Paladin with a shield. 😂

If you withdraw into shell, don't you lose 3/4 shield defense?

What about armor at level one?
