Lexus LBX: Bringing Premium Appeal to the Compact Crossover Market

Lexus is aiming to shake up the compact crossover segment with the arrival of its bold new LBX model. Designed and engineered specifically for European tastes, the LBX marks new territory for the luxury brand in terms of its size, styling and intended appeal to a younger, more style-focused audience.

At just 4.2m long, the LBX is Lexus’ smallest model yet, but its stand-out looks certainly make a big first impression. The exterior breaks new ground with a “deconstructed” version of Lexus’ famous spindle grille, separated into upper and lower sections to frame a new aperture in the bodywork. Flanked by sharp headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights, this creates a fresh “Resolute Look” face for the brand.

Muscular wheel arches, side sculpting and a rear end inspired by Japanese Kagami-Mochi cakes give the LBX a powerful stance belying its compact dimensions. Inside, Lexus has focused on delivering a modern, driver-focused cockpit environment, with excellent visibility and space maximisation aided by the low-slung driving position.

At the heart of the LBX’s appeal lies an advanced new 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. Delivering 136hp, this focuses on strong and responsive performance rather than outright economy. The interior is smartly finished and can even be personalised through Lexus’ new Bespoke Build service.

Driving dynamics have been a key focus for the LBX’s development team. An extended wheelbase allied to wide track, weight-saving strategies in the body construction, bespoke suspension tuning and sizeable 18-inch alloy wheels endow the crossover with agile handling backed up by exceptional ride comfort and refinement.

Safety provisions are class-leading too, with every LBX featuring the latest Lexus Safety System + package as standard. This equips the car with a comprehensive array of active systems to help avoid accidents, including a Pre-Collision System with new hazard detection and collision mitigation functions.

Lexus has taken an innovative approach to building the LBX model range, moving away from traditional specifications and grades. Instead, the focus is on new “Atmosphere” concepts aligned to different owner lifestyles and preferences. Customers can choose from dynamic Emotion and Cool model or more elegant styling with the Relax and Elegant versions.

The LBX also debuts Lexus’ new Bespoke Build service, allowing owners to personalise their car though a choice of exclusive options. These include custom exterior paint colours and interior trim combinations with premium leather and stitching details.

Lexus is anticipating high demand for its new arrival, targeting sales of 24,000 LBX models in Europe during 2024 alone. Order books are open now, with customer deliveries scheduled from March next year. Launch models include a racy-looking LBX Cool Original Edition, limited to just 2,000 examples across Europe.
