Just finished season 4 and I'm not sure I want to press on. It's good stuff overall but it can be so inconsistent (because too many different writers, probably). They keep bringing back characters I loathe, like "Five by five" Faith. I was surprised Drucilla didn't come walking back into an episode to do her trademark English spoiled pouting routine.

There are definitely flaws. Why did they even make that season 4 episode where Jonathan comes back in a fantasy as a massive celebrity? It took me a moment to remember him in the school shooting episode from an earlier season. The little nerd guy. Ugh, it's things like that which drive me bonkers. When Buffy is lame it is a complete cripple.

And in every single episode there has to be a fight, and that is a huge bore for me.

Spike is hilarious and so suave, and gets some really great lines of dialogue. He is the one character who deserves a spinoff series but it wouldn't work because he is not a "straight man", he is a character that others react to (see Kramer on Seinfeld for more of that).

One of my favorite fantasy shows was Supernatural. Its first few seasons were wonderful. It went on waaaay too long but I liked it overall-- even though it sank so deep in quality for a long stretch in the middle of those 15 seasons. I can't help compare that show to Buffy but it's not fair. Oh, and I also liked The X-Files but just for the 'Monster of the Week' episodes. Plus, they did some amazing stuff in their first several seasons, like the one called Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose (anyone who knows that name, Clyde Bruckman, is a big fan of a certain old time comedy team).

I'd love a show like Buffy that's just comedy with a nice splash of the macabre. I know, I can watch things like Ash Vs. Evil Dead, or Stan Against Evil (I did, and enjoyed them tremendously) ... they're almost what I want. But when Buffy, seasons 1-4, was funny it was something special.

Great video! I've been watching Buffy on Comet TV. I never got into it before until now. Watching the characters develop, and seeing some spectacular surprises along the way, I have grown to really enjoy the show.

I am very late to this party and I was genuinely excited to dive into a good season 1 retrospective until you completely unfairly ragged on it, not cool 😢 Season 1 laid the foundations on which the show would grow and flourish. I was of age when Buffy first aired and the production value never bothered me even back then and I feel it adds a charm to the first season. Also kinda surprised you don't appear to have much love for season 2. Going into the first 2 season playlists with a sense of trepidation....

I rate shows by seasons. Seasons 1 and 3 are in my top 10. Top 5 to be honest. 5 around 10. Only shows with more than 1 season in my top 10 are buffy and avatar atla. Arcane season 1 is number 1.

Spike's trademark coat cost $2,000 from a top fashion store. It was then run over repeatedly by a truck to give it that distressed look.

James Marsters only read the scripts for his own scenes, as he was a fan of the show and didn't want to have the rest of the episode spoiled for him.

Series creator Joss Whedon has said that the idea for Buffy came from all the horror movies he had seen featuring a helpless young blonde who would almost always be the first to die. He felt she needed a better image.

Angel was originally conceived as nothing more than a weird guy who occasionally showed up to give Buffy vague advice. There were several ideas for his true identity tossed around, including that he was an actual angel who needed to complete a certain number of good deeds before being allowed back into Heaven, before his being a vampire was decided on literally while writing the episode with the reveal.

Seth Green disliked being underutilized in season three, as he hated having to show up for work when he'd only have one or two lines the whole time. This is why Oz is absent midway through season four.

Joss Whedon wanted to increase paranoia by making the vampires look like normal humans until it's time to feed and they transform into monsters. He wanted them to very clearly look like monsters though to ensure a certain level of fantasy on the show. It took 1 hour and 20 minutes to apply the facial prosthetic and just as long to remove it after filming.

Alyson Hannigan is very good friends with singer Pink whose daughter is named Willow. After her birth, Hannigan praised her name choice on Twitter.

The cast hated the library scenes, since they were full of exposition and took forever to film. They all celebrated when it blew up.

Ranked #10 on Entertainment Weekly's list of the "100 Greatest Shows of All Time."

Sarah Michelle Gellar's favorite episodes were The Prom (1999), Hush (1999), and The Body (2001).

Sarah Michelle Gellar was unable to attend the wrap party, as she was busy filming Scooby-Doo (2002).

There are just seven episodes in which no vampire appears. They are Witch (1997), The Pack (1997), I, Robot... You, Jane (1997), The Puppet Show (1997), Inca Mummy Girl (1997), Living Conditions (1999), and Fear Itself (1999). In the other ones, even when there are no vampire foes, there's always Angel, or Spike. Or both.

The series is not based on the feature film Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), but Joss Whedon's original screenplay, which had been heavily re-written to be more comedic. The Buffy comic book series adapted the screenplay, bringing the events of the movie in-line with the television show's continuity.

Sarah Michelle Gellar disliked season six, because of the dark tone of the storylines. She also wasn't a fan of the extensive preparation that had to be done for Once More, with Feeling (2001).

Spike's birth name William Pratt is also the birth name of iconic horror actor Boris Karloff.

In Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), Buffy says that her only life goals are to "graduate, go to Europe, marry Christian Slater, and die." Although Joss Whedon has repeatedly stressed that the movie should not be considered "canon" for the television show, by the end of it, Buffy actually accomplishes three of these goals, graduate, go to Europe, and die, although, not in that order.

Buffy's full name is "Buffy Anne Summers". This was explained in Anne (1998), where Buffy said Anne is her middle name.

Before he was turned into a vampire, Spike's name was William. Angel's real name was Liam.

I actually don’t think you just have to get through the first season, it doesn’t have a good budget or as much complexity of the other seasons, but those seasons go beyond what I expect from tv, the first season is goofy and fun, and it would be a good watch even if there were only season 1. We’re just lucky that some of the best tv followed the first season.

Anyone else sick of hearing Buffy season 1 slander? I loved season one. I became a fan during season 1. The season 1 two-part premier and the season 1 two-part finale are four of my favorite episodes of the show, like ever, out of the whole seven seasons. Yes season 2 and 3 are better, but season 1 is definitely better than 4-7. Right????

The thing I always liked about this show and the thing that set it apart from most shows of this genre, is that there was some thought given to what it would really be like for the girl. As we see over the course of the series, most slayers are ultimately psychiatric trainwrecks, as they probably would be. As Spike pointed out, Slayers die, not because a vampire outfought them but because they all get to a point where they welcome the release of death.

Joss Wheaton is a great example of men who yell about how progressive and feminist they are to hide really bad personal behavior. Destroying the Chrisma Carpenters character and making her life on set deeply unpleasant because she refused to get an abortion, he wanted her to have is the kind of crap an old school misogynist would have done. I just found out the then teenaged actress who played Dawn said she had to be careful not to be alone with him.

I watched this show as it aired when I was in my late teens from around midway in season 2 and got hooked. To this day I have loved and adored many other television shows, but Buffy is still my favorite. Eminently rewatchable and has some of the best episodes of television ever filmed and legitimately the best musical episode in TV history. The thing about this show that really puts it over the top is its characters and writing. If you give this show a chance these characters will become some of your favorite characters in all of media. They are complex, have meaningful growth arcs, and are brilliantly acted. This show sticks with you.

and for a 90s show they handled the gay topic as unoffensively as you could imagine for that time.
