I am in my FIFTIES re-learning statistics for my Masters and forgot most of the fundamentals though I use statistics very day. Why squaring and square root instead of using the absolute value of each difference?

Is it really always zero though? Σ(x-x̅) ?

n-1 is used to eliminate bias

Why can’t you take the absolute value? Sigma|(xi - x)|/N instead of Sigma(xi - x)^2/N?

He is a wonderful teacher. Explanary. However, most of the lectures are not continued. Probably he must be thinking of marketing his lecture series. Why he can't consider the humanities. Mr. Jayson, something doesn't add up to me. Why was it chosen to be squared to eliminate the negativity rather than absolute value could have been taken? In addition, would you please tell me why the sample variance has -1 in the denominator while the population variance doesn't?
