The audience watching in the 90s would think of 70s porn films as looking like crap (esp. with no preservation on them). The idea I think is that Reynolds character is not a good filmmaker but thinks he is.

A note to the person who creates these videos. You do a great job. I'd love to see more female ones. Elaine May, Claire Denis!

Just because someone is based off a person. Doesn’t mean they have to be 100 percent the same Quentin.

Interesting comments by Quentin. I think Burt in character saying "this is his best work," when the film looks cheap and crappy, it's because Paul Thomas Anderson needed a sharp contrast between what we think of as a quality film and a porno from the 70"s. The joke is these porno film makers were thinking they were making art.

When I was in my early 20's and saw Boogie Nights for the first time, I didn't really care for it. Just like Jackie Brown and The Big Lebowski. Now a quarter of a century later these 3 are in my top 10 films. Ever. Time and great cinema can be weird.

Such a bummer that Reynolds was never proud of making this film, even after nearly winning an Oscar. He's so good in it.

the cop movie is shit but it is drastically better than the first scene they shoot with dirk if you remember. That scene had no intelligible story and acting was absurdly cold. Burt Reynolds character is an awful director but he is worried that tape recorder is going to ruin his “art” somehow. Maybe his only claim to being an artist is having a crew and developing film. Maybe that’s why he dreads tape recorders.

Burt saying "this is my best work" was clearly lifted from Depp's line "this is what I'll be remembered for" from Ed Wood. As for Burt's character... he's inspired by Damiano but he isn't Damiano, so artistic licence can clearly be used.

“This portrayal of this character isn’t accurate to the person it’s based on”

My guy, you made Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood , two films that aren’t known for their historical accuracy.

Burt Reynolds almost played George Spahn in "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood", but he died a few days before they filmed his part, so, Bruce Dern played him instead. Boogie Nights is on my list of the top 20 films of all time... and, I agree with Quentin; the New Years Eve 1979, about to be 1980, scene is the exact part where the film turns dark and depressing... which aligns with my memories as a kid. The 70's were incredible and as soon as it rolled over into the Reagan 80's, everything just sucked!

The man who made Bruce Lee look like a dumbass clown in his movie all the sudden thinks that someone loosely RESEMBLING another person has to be a perfect carbon copy of said person, even at the expense of comedy. What a random take!

According to an adult film star of that era, Herschel Savage, Gerard Damiano considered himself among the greatest filmmakers of all time. I heard it on the Rialto Report podcast interview with him. So if Paul Thomas Anderson was aware of that conception somehow back in the 1990s, then Tarantino is missing the point.

Boogie Nights has a lot of merits, but it's no There Will Be Blood, and I actually think Burt Reynolds is sorta overrated in it. He reportedly was very difficult to work with and not especially into the role, and to me, it shows. I liked what they were going for with the character but for me the movie didn't 100% sell it. Still an intriguing and highly original picture though, I know I'm in the minority, at least among its fans.

Tbh the Damiano ressemblance is quite negligible. Totally agree about the clash between the quality of the cop film compared to how hyped up bert’s character is about it. It’s unfitting. (But hilarious)

I think Quentin is losing sight of the fact that Boogie Nights is ultimately a comedy. A major comedic theme in the movie is the ignorance and incompetence of the characters.
