In the guitar community, there is no other thing talked about more often than tone. In modern times, modelers, amp sims, cab IR's have taken over a large part of the vehicle in which guitarists offer up their sound. These things offer great and brutal tones that are likened to your favorite guitarists', and are used widely among people who record themselves at home in their own DAWs and studios. But is this a good thing? That is the question that I am going to take a look at, and hopefully try to answer. You may or may not notice that many bands offering up music these days tend to sound the same, especially when it comes to their own guitar tone. This is a consequence of many different factors. One of those factors is expectation. Musicians, especially metal musicians, have come to expect that metal, and their guitar tone, SHOULD sound a certain way. This is a cultural effect mostly brought on by the ease of using amp sims, modelers, and IRs. This lack of variation, I feel, has stagnated the metal community as it seems that nothing really "new" is being offered. If we toss amps and cabs aside, we are taking out the BIGGEST variable that is the deciding factor of what our tone will be. I think it's time we drop the expectation of what "good tone" is, and start trying to get to the bottom of it. Music is entirely subjective, so stop letting other guitarists tell you what "good tone" is, and start deciding for yourself what fits, and how you can separate yourself from the next guy.
