I dont think the Chinese really invented the gun. They used the flamability of it and maximized its usage in warfare. But early gunpowder contained a lot more ingredients than the charcoal, sulvur and saltpeter. The ratios were also always off causing it to not explode but mainly ignite. The refinment of this necessary for guns and cannons probably happened in Europe and therefor they are credited for the gun and the Chinese for the gunpowder.

A spear's butt end with a pouch or strap can be used as a sling. Why not hurl a fist sized rock before readying for a throw or (couching for) charge in formation? Might ruin a few shields or longer pikes.
