After watching the movie and reflecting on it a bit, i thought he was only a jerk the whole movie as a test to see if the AI would react with violence.

It took my a while to realize that Kyoko didn't stab him(as the rules of robots and AI , not to harm humans) , she just pointed the knife, and he walked bck into it. On the other hand, Ava's AI was more advanced and broke the rules of AI, she infact trancsended into something more, thats why she could stab him, avoiding the rules.

It seems that he didn't think his plan through to what would would happen if she actually gained her freedom.
