Blackmagic Proxy Generator DaVinci Resolve 18 Tutorial

Yepp, really cool except... what if your source files are a mixture of mp4, mov files? If your plan is to send the proxy files to another user then they won't be able to relink to mp4 files if you have converted to .mov files ???

Strange codec options. H264/5 normally is not for editing. It's to cpu intensive. When I use proxyfiles those are bigger but much less cpu intensive to work with. Seems this is another use case. Are the other codecs still available for proxy? DNxHD/R.
Also where to set the resolution of the proxies? Important setting!

I love how you explained this. The process is so simple that it's almost difficult because everything is working in the background. You mentioned that it's not a good idea to color off of proxies, but CAN you color the proxies? Maybe with the highest quality of the 3 choices? This would be huge with the new remote workflow. I would think that you wouldn't get the same flexibility and you'd of course lose the RAW benefits but I'd think you could at least balance the shots and tweak colors a bit (??)

Yeah, that all great - thx. But how do I get access to this additional program, where do I find the 'Proxy Generator'? Everybody tells us about the great things you can do with it - but nobody tells us where to get it from - can you?

Great to have a dedicated software for proxies. But I'm missing a few things. It would be nice to have an option to add suffixes to file names of proxies. Etc. my friend is editing on another NLE ( Premiere) where all proxies are with suffix '_Proxy'. So this option would open up more freedom for editors from other NLE's. That would make linkink raw files to proxies in Premiere automatic too. Also, it would be great to have an option selecting a lut so that the editing process with proxies would be visually more accurate and pleasant to work with.

Playing around with it I've noticed if you make subfolders to categories clips the proxy generator will make a proxy folder under each folder/subfolder for the files in that folder. That would make it a nightmare to try sending proxy files and folder structure. I was hoping it would just have one proxy folder at the top level and then duplicate your sub folder structure under that single proxy folder. Uuugh

the wait period that it uses to poll the watch folders is 5 minutes, not every few seconds. At least on the Mac. Additionally you can just drag and drop folders into the watch folder list. If you have sub-folders under a given watch folder they will be watched as well and get their own cild proxy folders within them.

Question please...If I already created proxies outside of Davinci. How can I incorporate the proxies in the new project and toggel back and forth like we do when we create them inside Davinci? did that make any sense? or is that even possible? Thank you

A good tutorial. But you should do a short update mentioning that the proxy generator only creates files in 16:9 aspect ratio. So it's no good if you're working with 4:3 aspect ratio. E.g anamorphic, Open-gate, cinema 4K, 5K, 6K video files.

Dumb question but I'm assuming when you export it uses the camera originals? In other words, does it export from the highest quality file available.

Have you ever used handbrake proxies? I dont undertstand how its running so smoothly... its still an Mp4 4k close to half the size... smoother than ive ever seeen... even with several effects and color grading..

I like the proxy generator for 4k 16:9 footage. But für 5.8 K full sensor size footage, the quality is bad. To small in the wide.

Hey Justin, maybe you can help me: My Sony camera already creates proxies automatically. The original is e.g. C1234.mp4. Proxy is: C1234S03.mp4. Is there a script, a button, a function, a solution to tell Davinci to connect all files automatically? Otherwise I have to click through sooo many clips one by one.

What happens if you already have your footage separated into folders and you generate proxies. Does it do them all into one folder or separate folders?

Hi, I have a problem when I use proxy media generator black. If the video I want to turn into a proxy video has mono audio, when I use the proxy it is muted. If I turn a stereo video into a proxy video, the audio is mono. How can I fix it? I would like to be able to hear at least one mono audio track for all videos (stereo and mono).
