What does stalemate mean

I'm so confused on how a stalemate is called and what it is. The next move black makes put some in automatic checkmate right? So why doesn't white win is it just that the king can't move himself into check? If so that seems crazy

Testing my own amateur chess skills here: moving the queen to f8 prior to advancing the pawn for promotion would have left the king a small number of spaces to flounder in, yes? g4/5/6 and h5/6/7 if I'm not mistaken.

Would have averted the stalemate while still clinching the game.

I don't play chess. What is a stalemate? To me, it sounds like a situation where neither player can win, so the game ends in a tie. This game clearly still had actions to take that can result in a win for white.

If you give your opponent no way out WITHOUT checkmating him, it's a stalemate. Black could no longer move after moving his king.

He couldn't move back because the a queen is guarding that entire row, he couldn't move left or right because the pawn is guarding those spaces, and he couldn't move down a row because whites king was guarding those spaces so he's officially trapped.

But... white gets a chance to avoid this stalemate by moving his queen and freeing up space for black to move. But instead of moving his queen white got a little too eager. Not realizing his opponent had no options white chose to push his pawn toward promotion instead. Solidifying the stalemate and ending the game with a draw.

No move the queen put his king in check he loses it's not that hard.

Do they pretend they can play chess? Is it a joke?
