Punctuation: the Semicolon (;) & Colon (:)

I was scared of using semi colons because i was scared; however, i now understand!

The dish calls for several key ingredients; for example, a, b, and c. Sir, I checked this example online showing error while using a semicolon, giving suggestions using a colon instead of that. Please also check whatever I wrote here, is right or wrong.

For some bizarre, but funny reason, this came to my mind:
Has anyone ever seriously thought about the character, "semi-colon" since "semi" means half, or 50%? Seriously. Why is it called a "semi-colon" ["half-colon"] anyway? The bottom 'comma' portion clearly uses more space than the the upper, 'colon' [plus SPACE] part therefore it's MORE than just 'semi' [half] ? Shouldn't it be more accurate to call it a "comma plus dot," or, a "dotted comma" like we say, "dotted 'i'?"

You contradicted yourself with the colon examples. You said what came after it would be a bad sentence, but the first sentences were also horrible sentences that I would NEVER use by themselves.
