the main reason for meta spending on ai development is because advanced ai models let them do better ad targeting. the open source llm’s are just a byproduct. it’s not that they suddenly decided to be altruistic or give people a fun llm toy to play with. the results of their ai development costs directly contribute to the revenue of their ad business.

Good for him, I guess, but frankly, I have been increasingly disappointed with the products the past few years. My engagement dwindles continually, and I understand that's just anectodal and personal, but still. Also, I think AI is mostly hype that can't deliver its promises.

Why make it open source? To bring more users because the software is free. To bring more developers (and thus more users) because the software is free. Once you bring all the free software devs and users, you can then try to monetize them somehow. Meta making the AI stuff open source was a smart move. Though I suspect later on they will close the source once they've sucked up the benefits of open source. But at least that source would be out in the wild for others to use :)

Nobody can become financially successful overnight. They put in background work but we tend to see the finished part. Facebook is still very much screwed long term. The law of large numbers means that they quite literally can't keep growing much more unless the world population continues to grow (and world population growth has been slowing for a while). They're also so dominant in social media that a lot of their user growth is just cannibalization of their own products. Worse yet, they're so big now that there's ZERO chance that ANY government is EVER going to let them buy another social media company, which is the only way they've ever been successful at starting a new social media product (outside of Facebook itself). The Metaverse is an utter failure, and VR is always going to be a very niche market at most, it just has some temporary hype due to the costs coming down in recent years. And no AI company is anywhere close to profitability, nor will they be any time soon.
