Tim Cook is very intelligent, so I am sure he came well-prepared for his conversation with Trump, with information about why a “100% Made in USA” iPhone is an insurmountable problem. Clearly, though, that’s had no effect on Trump’s conviction to get it done.

The only way out that I can see is for the companies to take the tariff hit. Apple, Samsung, and all other manufacturers who plan to sell phones here will need to factor in a 25% price hike to cover the increased production costs.

That will, of course, mean consumers will need to spend a lot more on phones than they have in the past. Just to give you an idea of what that means, the iPhone 16 and Galaxy S25 both start at $799, and a 25% increase would push them to $999.

if you make a iphone for 250$ in china/india and sell it for 1000$ in USA. You get a 750$ profit and you become the richest company in the world 2-3 trillion USD. Now suddenly you are asked to build the same phone in USA now price goes from 250$ to 500$ maybe 600$. Would you still manufacture it? Or would happily pay 25% tarrif on 1000$ and eat the tarriff so it doesnt hurt consumer. Its all apple descision now.

What's his plan here ? Force apple to manufacture in America so that everyone will pay 3000$ for one iPhone ? Even with 25% tarrif the cost of each iphone will still be significantly lower if produced in India than in US. So i highly doubt apple (or any other company) will change their decision.

The point is complex regarding Tariffs. Tariffs will be defined differently depending on many factors. With Apple, an American Company, they are chasing the best overhead (cheapest) the world has to offer, because they can. It's been China. Now it looks like India or Vietnam. The USA is not just a market to sell within in the world. It is "THE MARKET." Americans spend more per capita (person) in any other nation by far. Tariffs are the fee to do sell product here. Apple will do what's best for the stock holder. Trump will do what's best for America. Consumers will determine what's too much to pay. If the iPhone costs too much, don't buy it. Buy the older new generation iPhone. The thesis is: "invest and build in America" is the #1 priority/message. Tariff's are a tough subject and, it's always flexing. Don't be surprised if the claimed 25% flexes as the tariff chat evolves. Recognize and be watchful. Trump is orchestrating fundamental shift to tariffs away from income taxes on income.
