Thanks this was interesting! Good point about alt clothes being used for silent communication...I remember spotting a girl on campus with a black EAT THE RICH t-shirt and I knew I had to ask her out. Took her to a slam dance gig ft. Malhavoc. The power of alt fashion!

In the 18th century there were dandies like Beau Brummell. And in Spain there was a more working class subculture called Majos that was like proto Jersey Shore, a lot of paintings by Goya show them. Drag is also a thing that has a long history that has invented a lot that mainstream culture ends up adopting

I was wondering what all the "cores" were all about, they've consumed lots of social media platforms, and I swear it's like a new rule 34; if it exists, there's a core of it.

(Some of them seem...a little repetitive though too? E.g. funeralcore....I think that's...just goth?)

Love this video!! I think a video on the commercialization of alternative fashion would be cool! Most (not all) alternative fashion subcultures were rebels who bought what they could and made what they could and i totally understand the anger at the commercialization of diy subcultures!

I have a friend who also wears only 70's clothes and he styles his hair like 70's style. Do you think you could make a video about like the different looks that the trending "Alt girl" has on tiktok because there are so many different styles that i have scene but they all have like an overlapping similarity as well.

I really loved the video. What I really dislike about aesthetic trends is how hyper consumer they have become. Like I love the e-girl aesthetic and grunge/goth/metalhead look. But I also want to live a little minimalist, since I have noticed that I wear the same clothes anyways. Ahh the struggle is real.

I think it's funny how jeans/pants keep cycling for trends. I've been playing with my wardrobe and I honestly like slim jeans so much better now. Clothes that fit your body well always look good. I'm skinny myself so baggy doesn't necessarily look good on me.

Back in ‘44 i sported the first ever clout goggles, it was a movement against the nazis, taking the attention off your moustache and towards the goggles 🕶

I can give you a couple of things to research from previous centuries: 1. Aesthetic/artistic dress of the 1860s-1870s was a reaction against the really structured garments of the Victorian era. It did eventually become mainstream, but it was considered outside the norm for quite awhile. 2. Bloomer dress in the 1850s. Associated with early feminism. :)

I've been a Metalhead for 15 years, and I dress a mixture of Punk, Metal and Goth..

I like Goth Rock, Deathrock and Darkwave as well as Punk and Technical Death Metal, Progressive Metal, DSBM etc etc...

I never looked up how alternative fashion started though.. was curious to know.

Hi, thank you very much for the video, I'm writing a paper rn about alternative subcultures so this was a great place to start digging. I was wondering though why you left out things like "attitudes against heteronormativity" in the Wikipedia article (I was reading along with you and couldn't help but notice)

I love your story about the woman who wore all pink. I love goth music and gothic art and literature, but I had a pink phase not too long ago. Who would have guessed that a goth girl would wear mostly pink for a while, with her blonde hair? I never stopped being goth, though. Maybe I was expressing a different facet of my multifaceted self and still holding on to my dark heart through a lighter expression for a while? Maybe? 🩷🖤
