How do you keep the bristle flexibility when cleaning them? I have a set but haven't used them yet for fear of ruining the bristles...

I've always wondered about the storage after use. Do you put that plastic sleeve back on the brush? I've done that, but it seems to make loose bristles that mess up my paint strokes. Am I doing something wrong, or is the sleeve just for shipping?
