Captain Mulla’s Heroic Sacrifice at Sea (1971 Indo-Pak War)

In the 1971 Indo-Pak War, the heroic tale of Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla and INS Khukri remains etched in history. On December 9, 1971, Captain Mulla, fondly known as "Veeru," commanded INS Khukri, an anti-submarine frigate, on a mission to locate the Pakistani submarine PNS Hangor in the North Arabian Sea. What followed was an act of valour that has inspired generations of Indian Navy officers.

On that fateful night, as INS Khukri neared the Pakistani submarine, a sudden explosion rocked the ship. PNS Hangor had fired torpedoes, hitting INS Khukri directly. Within minutes, the ship began sinking, but Captain Mulla displayed exceptional bravery, putting the lives of his men before his own.

Despite a severe injury, Captain Mulla helped his comrades escape from the sinking vessel. As the ship tilted dangerously, he chose to stay behind, sacrificing his life jacket to another sailor. His final moments were spent saving his men, instructing them to jump into the sea while he continued to assist those trapped under the deck.

Eyewitness accounts recall Captain Mulla with a cigarette in his mouth, calmly overseeing the rescue as the ship went down. Sub Lieutenant SK Basu, who was on the bridge at the time, remembers the Captain's words: "Get off baccha," urging him to jump to safety. Captain Mulla's refusal to abandon his crew saved 64 lives that night.

INS Khukri sank, but the legacy of Captain Mulla's bravery lived on. For his supreme sacrifice, Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla was posthumously awarded the Mahavir Chakra, India's second-highest military honour. His selflessness became a lesson in leadership and courage, demonstrating that true heroes place the safety of others before their own.

The Khukri memorial in Diu honours the memory of Captain Mulla and the 194 martyrs of INS Khukri. A scaled model of the ship, encased in glass, stands proudly atop a hill overlooking the sea, a lasting tribute to the valour and sacrifice of those who perished.

Captain Mulla’s daughter, Dr. Ameeta Mulla Wattal, fondly remembers her father as a man of courage and honour. His sacrifice teaches future generations not just how to live but how to die for one’s country. The story of Captain Mulla and INS Khukri continues to inspire naval officers and citizens alike, reminding us that the ultimate measure of heroism is the willingness to sacrifice oneself for the greater good.
