Ted Heath dragged England into the EU (common market) because England was a financial basket case then 1972.

I hope Brendan that you're right in your theory. However, Starmer and his government's comms is so lousy I wonder if they are actually capable of anything positive, given that the only narrative that gained traction was when they told us the country was sh*t! The problem will be that to re-pivot towards Europe will require the PM to set a compelling narrative explaining the reasons why, and in doing so build a consensus thereby weakening the Farage position. Without such a narrative nothing, I fear, will change. Starmer is not a leader but a mediocre backroom administrator lacking vision.

The only politically possible way for the UK joining the EU (there is no such thing as rejoining, legally speaking) would be for the Tories to switch to a pro-EU stance. Not happening any time soon I am afraid, if ever. A good start would be to stop discussing the EU from a purely economic point of view. Not happening, either, as far as I can see.
Based on this, you are trying to ride a horse that is as dead as it can be and has no foreseeable chance of rising from the ashes of Brexaster.

The UK will be welcomed back in after negotiations, but the UK standards are the same and we only left 4 years go, so far from insurmountable. EU leader and leaders of major and many smaller EU nations all want the UK back in. Joining the Customs Union should be relatively simple an d would ditch a terrible AU/NZ deal and others slightly worse than equivalent in the EU, so good.

Unfortunately BREXIT by its very nature is a binary concept and this is part of the conundrum. We're either in the EU or out. There is no halfway option. We can't cherry pick. Until our politicians accept this truth and promote honest debate on the consequences and benefits of staying out or rejoining we will never be an attractive candidate to the existing EU members.
Vested interest and those living in Britain's imperial past have seen to that.

The UK will struggle for some time unfortunately. If in the futue the UK is able to join the EU, it will be as an ordinary member. There will be no opt out clauses etc, that includes adopting the Euro. So it is not rejoining, it is applying to join and meeting their conditions.

It's discouraging to see that even a proEU party still speaks about rejoining. There is no such option. The only way is to apply for joining under the present conditions like anyone else. These conditions are now a lot tougher than in the past without room for exceptions.
Most brexiteers still don't realise what they've thrown away, they are too busy moaning it's all the fault of anyone else.

The UK demands everything and offers nothing. What's in it for the EU?
Plus, Ireland will block them from rejoining. You need one dissenting vote, and the Brits are toast.
And one more thing: there's no way in hell the Brits will dump the pound in favor of the Euro. So all this talk about rejoining the EU is just pie in the sky.

Culturally, the UK is European but the dominance of the right has clouded that. They wish that the UK, especially "England" is just like the USA, only more so. The majority do no even consider the implications.

Problem for England is they think the world is like 30 years ago when England could rule and decide in the world.. but in 2024 and onwards it is a new world more countries are getting rich China India both countries with over 1 billion people more countries in Asia, Africa, etc. show the way forward. Then England wants to manage itself in the world, they have to fight for new and old friends so you can then sell your goods in the world, get factories up in the world.. you have to spend a lot of money on research so you can come up with new things, so at least can keep up with and preferably be in plus in development. you, like the USA, must borrow money so that your country can keep up with what Europe and the USA are doing now and in the future.

There appears to be an excessive enphasys on rejoining the EU as a sine qua non condition to cater for the growth of the British economy and little or no enphasys on what the EU is about. The EU is a lot more than just economy but the Briitish public do not seem to be adequately informed. This I consider to be the biggest obstacle of all.

Britain is a sinking ship? So the european union is going to save us if we rejoin? Bit naive isnt it?

How is going back to paying in 40 billion to the EU going to make us better off?

The waste, the inefficiency, the kellergi plan. You talk like we have always been in the EU.

Its insidious rules and regulations destroyed britain and is now destroying the major entities that make up the EU.

The EU has a 14 trilllion euro debt. When it does finally fail and believe me it is teetering on the edge right now. What percentage of this 14 trillion will the british be expected to pick up? You know the answer to that.

The only people who are going to have their snouts in the European trough are civil servants and eurocrats.

For the rest of us its no fishing rights, 40 billion please kching, kching and oh by the way there's a half million islamic fighting men a year for you to shoulder.

EUtopia.

I personally don't see the UK ever fully rejoining the EU. At the moment I hear rejoiners quoting various polls that show a majority in favour. However I am certain that will dwindle significantly when many realise we won't get a deal similar as before and have to accept the euro, free movement and contributing to huge costs of supporting other economies ( Greece, Spain, Italy etc.). Then the polls will definitely change. Even if rejoin were to retain a much smaller majority, the EU will be very reluctant to accept a country with a significant minority hostile to it and "re-leaving" always a possibility. We should consider applying for membership of single market only in about 10/15 years and leave it at that, which is consistant with what we thought we were joining in the 1970s

Departments are being asked to find cuts in order to pay wages, the navy is having to get rid of ships, businesses are being taxed into bankruptcy and people are being left to freeze because they can't afford the sky high bills! And some people are talking about war with Russia? We are left with the damage that Brexit has caused, and we have no possibility of fixing that damage within the next 10-20 years. The "Patriotic Brits" (Putins useful idiots) have crippled the country
