Would it be a good idea to make a location list of all the things you found places for so that in the future you can easily locate what you are looking for?
ОтветитьI think mischief is a Gunter rig as opposed to a gaff rig . I think where the mast is behind the rudder stock is yawl , a ketch has the aft mast ahead of the rudder stock. Love the tiki tour up the inlets
ОтветитьDid you notice the fenders on the mooring barge Mark?
ОтветитьGreat video Mark, before we moved to N Z we had a boat in Falmouth Marina and knew the coast line very well and it brings back many memories thank you, The D Day area you saw was Trebah Gardens Mawarn Smith Falmouth
ОтветитьHi Mark
That sailing boat with the board on the side is a Dutch design. There should be one on each side and act as a keel. The boards are raised when it is in very shallow water.
Really enjoy your travels
Greta is a Yawl (aft mast behind the steering gear) and the yellow yacht has a "stepped mast". Love your channel, keep it up please :)
ОтветитьThanks Mark- Very enjoyable, always something to see and do, mate did you give that Tender tracker device a crack? Falmouth was just as busy as Plymouth hey! Don’t forget to give that French onion soup mix, sour cream and pasta meal a go, good comfort food. Take care, god bless.
ОтветитьJohnsonville Johnny Mark Glad you like Falmouth - and a little more history for you -- Sir Robin Knox-Johnston was the first person to sail around the world non-stop single-handed in his yacht Suhali and he took great delight in telling the Falmouth Harbourmaster who received him in after nearly 12 months at sea when he asked "what home Port" Johnston "Falmouth" Harbournaster "what destination" Johnston "Falmouth".
ОтветитьWell love that little dance on the bow Mark ya bloody ratbag love your adventures
ОтветитьAwesome
Thanks
If the mizzen mast is aft of the rudder post, it's a yawl. The yellow hull yacht looks to be a Bristol Pilot cutter.
ОтветитьMark, I have the identical Garmin set up and I very rarely use Auto Guideance, I plot a course, but even if I do I will engage Autopilot but never select follow route. Instead, my fingers say on the +1/-1 buttons of the auto pilot and I drive the boat using the auto guidance route or my plotted route as a guidance only. Typical example is when you point out the route goes 80 deg stbd and the autopilot does not and cannot follow. For me, I would use the super computer brain I have to start +1 +1 +1 +1 +5 +5 …+1 +1 until I have made a beautiful 83 Deg turn following the depth contours of the seabed. Your brain can take input from eyes, ears and cognitive readings to make a far far better route than the autopilot + auto guidance that are just reactive instead of proactive. Remember, you are in control, not the Garmin. Hope this helps.
Ответить“Mischief” has a topmast, which you can “send down” if needed e.g. for low bridges; very sadly in New York yesterday the Mexican Navy’s training barque “Cuauhtémoc” lost all three of hers in a tragic accident with the Brooklyn Bridge.
ОтветитьWill ya's look at this fella. Piloting the dingy and the chopper (drone) at the same time, while in motion. The skills on display here are exceptional 👌. The drone footage was incredible too. What a beautiful place.
ОтветитьThe green vessel with the "boards on the side" looks like a re-rigged Thames barge - re-rigged 'cos she has a much larger mizzen than the original barges. Do you remember her name? As others have said, the "boards" are "lee boards" that are used as a drop keel depending on tack. Thames barges plied their trade along the UK's east and south coasts, usually crewed by one man and a boy. The Dutch equivalent is a different but distinctive shape.
ОтветитьMark, are you expecting too much from your auto pilot? Don't forget, tides, currents, sea state, the shape of your hull, its windage, the pitch of your props and size of your rudder (rudders?) will all have an effect. Don't get too reliant on it...
ОтветитьAhhh fond memories. I was aboard HMT "Nevasa" when we laid her up just short of King Harry Ferry in late 1962; and she was 20,000 tons gross. A fine ship made redundant by the burgeoning jet age, of which you were part!!!
ОтветитьOh, the the "sticks" marking the channel are called "withies" (where I live anyway).
ОтветитьHEHE...👍👍👍👍
ОтветитьCheap flexible endoscopes that attach to your phone might be helpful here for inspections in tight places.. Have a simple light source and easy to use. Get one of the the more jointed ones that hold their shape so you can get round bends etc. Might save the knees and help spot those hard to reach places😊
ОтветитьNocoboost do a fabulous jump pack Mark I’ve always got one in the car. Varies sizes for batteries not expensive and will always get you out of the doo doo
ОтветитьNice video again Mark. Ref. your tender battery I bought a battery power pack for such occasions when a battery is low whether boat or car. Obviously you get what you pay for but a good investment for the boat.
ОтветитьI spent just over a week in Falmouth and visited surrounding towns back in 2016, staying with a local friend, me from Australia. I visited all the local boatbuilders around Cornwall and drank a beer at his local pub, he introduced me to his mates in the pub, we meet most evenings after touring, the beer was on the bar as we approached the barman and he called me by my name after the second night. Had a ball would do it again in a heartbeat. Great town and whole area with lots of inlets and rivers with places to go in a boat for sure.
ОтветитьMark, I'm curious about the alternator drive belts shedding rubber, has that been explained or resolved after the recent maintenance?
Also, that sailing boat was not a kitch as you stated, it was actually a ketch 🙂
The other boat with those paddles on the side - think they were Starboards and Larboards - basically keel surfaces that could be lowered and raised depending upon wind direction when sailing - I'm no mariner but I remember this from my old school books.
Hi Mark regarding your reorganisation I use an app called QuarterMaster to catalogue all the stuff on my boat. I have a Fleming and similar to the Nordhavn there are dozens and dozens of small storage areas around the boat. It’s a great way to be able to keep track of what you’re putting where and then locate the stuff with ease.
ОтветитьAgain, regarding that autopilot ''flying through'' the track line on such large heading changes - could it be that it's programmed to ''fly over'' the waypoint? Of course if so then it has to go through the next track line to some extent. Maybe you could build the route by creating 3 or 4 waypoints rather than just one waypoint for large route direction changes?
ОтветитьMark dad dancing at the beginning of the vid. Respect 😂
ОтветитьMast all the way back makes it a yawl I think.
Ответить🎉🎉🎉🎉
ОтветитьShocking dad dancing, don't give up your day job Mark ha.
Aside from that, great video.
Mark get a cheap Flexible bore scope/ Has a thousand uses, You can get it in the tiniest place and just view it on the screen
ОтветитьHI , you have to turn the seacoks from time to time or they will grow tight !
ОтветитьI spent a Month in Green & Silly Weir Drydock in 1965 on the MV Hauraki NZS Co
ОтветитьDid you take bimini down again.
Ответить👍
ОтветитьGreat to see you up the Fal River as we live in Malpas. Two things to didn't comment on - Tolverne Cottage as you round the corner from the King Harry Ferry where Dwight D Eisenhower spent the last nights before the D D landings to see his troops off. Tregothnan Estate over the hill in front of you - get the drone up. Home of the Boscowan Family since 1334 - Lord Falmouth.
ОтветитьGreat video Mark, glad you found your leak. Awesome drone footage. Keep safe cheers 🥃🏴
ОтветитьMark, the vessel with the mizzen mast behind the rudder is called a yawl. The sailing barge, the boards on the side are called leeboards and are lowered when the barge is under sail and act like a centre board on a dinghy. Love the scenery and the trips up the river.
ОтветитьLots to absorb in this epic video. Superior drone handling, banking between sailboat masts in a close-packed anchorage and almost scraping boulders zooming low over a beach. Nice work. The big boards on the side of the Dutch yacht are leeboards -- basically centerboards that lower on each side to give the boat a grip on the water to be able to sail. Grand old yacht Mischief may be a storied global wanderer. Very appealing old green-hulled cutter with long bowsprit anchored next to you. The yacht with sprit mast is gaff-rigged. Beautiful creeks you explored in the tender. Good work tracking down the source of the leak -- how the heck will you be able to get into that cramped space to fix it? Thanks for a highly entertaining and informative video Mark.
ОтветитьIf I’m on a deviation from auto guidance I often use the “recalculate auto guidance”. It will start a new track from the present position instead of making the massive turn back to the original route. Congrats on catching up!!
ОтветитьIf your tender battery goes flat you can pull start the o/b the old way. I had a 20hp mercury and had to do that a few times. Love the videos.
ОтветитьLove the Pandora Inn
Ответитьvery nicely done Mark.... and such a nice video!! had to see to twice!! what evolution on Awanui NZ..... so well done - thank you
ОтветитьThe Pandora is named after HMS Pandora the ship sent to capture the mutineers of The Bounty. After capturing 14 of them the the ship was wrecked on The Great Barrier Reef. Decendants of those not captured still live on the Pitcairn Islands.
ОтветитьYou old bugger have grown on me ..i spent 10 years as a ymi for licsl school there in falmouth.left in 2017 and sailed solo to ........turkey ...opposite to your trip ..tis funny shared a lot of the same stops ..my 90 year old father is now watch your vids too ..nice work
