I use the 45-70 +P 420gr WLNGC for Polar Bear control when necessary. The cartridge will stop any land animal living on the planet dead in it's tracks at 150 yds.

The only reason this caliber was popular Buffalo round is, ammo was given out free to old time Buffalo hunters.... who would then disassemble it into better calibers...

Beta Male: Glued together AR made from brands no one has heard of and more attachments hanging off it than a progressive press.

Chad Alpha: Marlin or Henry 45-70 with a wood stock.

I have a 45-70 so I'm definitely routing for it but in my area on Ammo is almost obsolete or $50 a box minimum! Also I would like to know from people who have shot game with it if it actually is as powerful as this claims. The reason I ask is Ron Spomer said he shot a 85lb warthog 3 times with one and it ran over 300 yards, I'm genuinely just curious if anyone has some personal experiences to share I'd love to hear!

460 S&W handgun cartridge shot from a rifle dethrones the king with 2900 fps and over 3700 ft pounds of energy. The 45-70 only comes close with +p rounds but no 45-70 manufacturer rates their guns for.

I’ve had some issues with 45-70 from grizzly ammo, it’s Cowboy load so I’m not expecting anything crazy but they’re hitting completely sideways at 100yds.

Interesting comments here, about the .45-70. My wife and I have backpacked up in the Wrangel-St Elias area and our Bush Pilot carried in his place, a Marlin .45-70, and a Freedom Arms .454 Casull revolver, with hard cast LBT slugs, and copious quantities of H110. As a backpacker, I was carrying the same pistol, and a similar load, with the same bullets. I felt well protected, and trusted his belief that we were, indeed, well protected. Those were our choices, and others may have varying mileage, and different choices. If we headed up that way, again, I would stick with what we took the first time. Accurate, powerful, and quick to deploy: the .454 Casull is good bear medicine, if properly applied. Same with the .45-70. That's my 'tuppence, and others can choose whatever they want. Take care, and God Bless! - Doc

Love me some 45-70. 😁👍, unfortunately up here in CCP-ANADA we don't have wild hogs, but we do have a ton other big game, The Hornaday 250 g leveroution rounds are pretty much every big game we have, but if you're going after the really big game something like Barnes Vortex in 300 grain will more than do the job 💪. And the Marlin levers are perfect in my opinion. The 45-70 is kinda like a 1911, or even the New York Yankees, or Red Soxs, if ya like them ya love them, and if you don't you kinda hate them lol. I'd have to say for the whitetail deer the old lever guns are my favorite hunting tools, the 30-30 and the 45-70 gotta be my two favorite rounds to use

The coolest thing I like about my 45/70 is hand making bullets for it. I don't think there are too many calibers where using hand tools you can make bullets. That's why I love my 1895 Marlin Guide Rifle.

I have had a few 45-70 handi rifles and a buffalo classic. I still use a handi rifle. I load my own shells from round ball plinking loads to loads around the marlin ballistics. They all do extremely well in the handi rifle, but, shoulder gets a bit sore with heavy loads. You can't beat the 405 grain hard cast for serious penetration and bone breaking.

nothing wrong with the cartridge, The max pressure is lower bc of older rifles. If it could handle higher pressures , use longer barrels, and slower burning powder it could hut 3450 foot lbs, which has been done. The stuff you can buy is anemic, so it only shines for handloaders.

I love my .45-70s — here in Alaska I run a Henry Model X for bear/moose defense because of its lack of safeties, and occasionally a new Winchester/Miroku Model 1886 for hunting. My Marlin ‘95 is also a nice rifle, but it’s taken a backseat to the Henry.

While i can usually get only 50 grains of FF powder in my reloads, im happy with that lighter reload.
I read that a famous "Prison load " was 3 balls in one cartridge, making a nasty "crowd control " load!

Cant ever find the 405 grain jacketed soft point. All modern 45-70 ammo is like a 350 grain hollow point. Its just not the same, nor is the 350 grain bullet what the cartridge was intended for.

The 45-70 was a great cartridge in its day but there are reasons it very nearly died out and all manufacturers quit producing it. Thus the .444 Marlin came to be. It is a pumpkin thrower and anyone that knows a little about ballistics will agree with that.

In the European Union "experts" - or rather the stupid "dark green" politicians - want to ban all lead (and maybe copper!) content projectiles for hunting and sports shooting. What are the chances of the .45-70 Government to be useful without these metals? I really like the carbine version of the 1886 it is a great stalking, bush, and driven game hunter carbine/rifle. I rather appreciate that kind of hunting than sitting and waiting on a stand with a scoped rifle (that's sniping for me not hunting).

I have a 2016 Remington made Marlin 1895 CB 45-70. 18.5” barrel with Ballard rifling, 6+1 rounds, American Black walnut stocks, semi-buckhorn rear and gold bead front sights. I like the Hornady 325 or the 250 mono leverevolution rounds, my favorite is the HSM 430 grain +P Bear Rounds. 1,801 FPS and 3,098 foot pounds of energy!!
