Just bought a 2025 Outback Onyx XT. Had it two weeks so far. It’s my third Subaru. Great vehicle. Infotainment system does lag a bit when you first start vehicle, but it doesn’t reach the level of “horrible” or “awful “ as some people say. God forbid you have to wait an extra second or two for the screen to acknowledge a touch command. (Talk about ridiculous first world problems) The complaint about the bass in the stereo is nitpicking. There are adjustments for bass, treble, etc. Adjust it the way you want it.

Its worth noting that the Mazda you have isnt really a Mazda AWD system. It's the Toyota system, which isn't really AWD. It's 2WD +2. Mazda's AWD systen in the other CX-50s is actually pretty good and more similar than you think. It works a lot like AWD system you get in automatic Subarus.It's just not programmed to be in FWD by default. The Subaru switches back into FWD when you let off the gas, though

Test drove one of these recently, in Wilderness trim. It was quick and pleasant to drive, but I was shocked at how small it felt compared to my '19 Santa Fe. It felt closer in size to a Ford Escape than a midsizer. Rear seat was nearly useless.

I hope they’ve improved the interior quality. The faux leather seat bolsters failed on ours after maybe 40k miles. ‘Leather’ seats, it turns out, doesn’t means all-leather. I wish everyone would just adopt something like VW or Mercedes synthetics. Their seats are bulletproof.

Another decent vehicle let down by awful technology implementation. I bet 80 percent of Subaru buyers would prefer 20 year old controls to that crap.

Before subaru steering went electric, it felt very good. They need to bring back that essential part of the driving experience. You could buy even the most basic trim level of legacy, outback, Impreza and still have very communicative steering. You could feel changes in road surfaces, engine vibrations, you could completely feel traction throughout a turn or a straight line.

I have the 2025 Legacy Touring XT. The car is so smooth and quick, that it almost doesn’t feel like a Subaru. 😆

The Subaru CVT and that infotainment is why a lot of us Subie loyalists abandoned the brand. The death of the STI was the bookmark end of the death of Subaru, which resurrected itself as a manufacturer that only chases SAHM.

I know it'll never happen, but they need to go back to the previous generation infotainment. The giant ipad screen system is HORRIBLE. It hangs and crashes all the time (which crashes the gauge cluster screen too). Simple things like turning on the seat heater require multiple presses and waiting for the dialogue to load. The rear camera is pixelated and laggy too.

I think piling on the infotainment system is just the thing to do because everybody else does it. Not sure what the big deal is. It is pretty intuitive and easy to navigate. People act like they are trying to launch nuclear missiles from the system. Nearly all functions have a button, dial, or is easily workable on the steering wheel. One exception is the fan. Once you begin driving how much fiddling are you doing that requires scrolling through the entire system?

I live in Québec city in Canada and we tend to get 'some snow'. The AWD Subaru cars are great for driving here in all weathers. I have been driving Subaru since 1997 and will replace my current 2016 Outback with the new Outback in 2026. These are great cars, reliable and not expensive in the long run.

Great video! Like you said, they've done such an amazing job perfecting the Outback...only to throw it away with the next gen. All indicators are that it will no longer be a lifted wagon, but a traditional SUV probably slotting in between Forester and Ascent. Very tempted to replace our 2016 Outback with one of these for that reason, if only it got better fuel economy and was better for long term towing (current gripe with our CVT).

For 99% of the people, the Outback really is all they need. I don't care what car guys say about CVTs, most people don't care about gears as long as the car is smooth. They really need to bring back the Forester XT.

@Proton-nm5nm
@Proton-nm5nm - 21.03.2025 03:18

I used to have a GTI and got old and couldn't deal with the road noise and harsh ride. I wanted something bigger, more comfortable, but still quick off the line. The outback XT is basically the couch on wheels equivalent to the GTI in that way. I still think it's the perfect choice for people who spent a lot of time with a hot hatch but want plush suspension and a quiet cabin as they enter their geriatric years.

Also, Cobb has a stage 1 and 2 for it now. With the tune, it hauls ass.

It doesn't handle like a sports car. But it has just enough feeling and speed with the turbo. And with the tune it beats a stock GTI from a dig.

Love this thing. I recommend it if you want some straight line power, but don't want to sacrifice any comfort.

Sorry, but outside of Toyota's CVT with a physical 1st gear, I'd never buy one. They don't last and I want my car to last. Don't care how good the rest of the car is around it, transmissions are not cheap to replace. Seen too many people I know either pay many thousands to replace these disposable trannies, or just outright trade the cars in before their time and buy a new one once the tranny started going. Kinda sad, but waddaya gonna do? I just stay away. ;-)

I have the same 2.4 turbo engine in a Subaru Ascent. At 84,000 miles it has been absolutely reliable. No issues whatsoever. Driven at other than WOT the engine and drivetrain are smooth and quiet. 10/10 would buy an Outback with the same engine. 1/10 would buy an Outback with the base engine.
