Firefox is being held hostage. Linux turned to the mobile travesty called android. Gimp is photoshop with down syndrome. Just to name a few. It seems like software that used to be useful for a comunity is being turned against said comunity until all that's left is a corporative implementation of the north-korean model. Call me black-pilled if you will.

Update this show and topic in two years after AI has taken complete control of software development. Oh Noooo!

Your problem is git. I choose this blunt locution in honor of LT's "stupid and ugly" speech and to clickbait this comment. But it isn't just clickbait.

So for the real response, first of all, this was an excellent video for the history lesson. And this history will prove my point. You basically summarized three phases: 1) Government, 2) Individuals, 3) Corporations. This is a Top-down, bottom-up cycle. 1) top-down, 2) bottom-up, 3) top-down. The other aspect has been the meta-technology, i.e., collaboration infrastructure. Each phase has been driven by different collaboration paradigms. Git was the most recent revolution which, when combined with GitHub, enabled the Cambrian explosion we know today.

But while git is open, GitHub is not. Plus, the git protocol itself is not supersymmetrical, i.e. the metadata exists out-of-band in config and not in the git object store graph. It is this aspect that enabled GitHub and prevents us from proper remuneration for individuals. We are close with DLTs, but they're not understanding the fundamental need for a version control rewrite. *People don't even think about not using git - even those building DLTs.* The recent AI explosion is related to this. A new, fine-grained version control is required to revolutionize the human-human and human-agent collaboration paradigm.

And just as you say, **the corporations are not inherently evil**. I would add this statement's dual: **open source is not inherently good**. Git is still the greatest DLT precisely because it enables private-public interspatial information sharing. This is in contrast with public-only blockchain-based solutions.

Of course, I am extremely biased because I've been working on my ibgib protocol for well over the past decade after my burnout in 2014. You can check out my project at the dot com website. In fact, if you look at the web 1.0 funding page, you'll find a sample of my ethos and ideas in the investing section.

But even if you don't check it out, you still should be investigating a replacement for git. Fine-grained project remuneration and a more sovereign-centric solution than DAOs is absolutely necessary to address the issues of this video. And a new version control paradigm will ultimately be required.

DJ, funding is important! As you say, everybody's got to eat... Thanks for the reminders. Ideologies are great, but things will work themselves out the way they want anyway. The longer freedom can stay in the game, the better.
I'm reminded of a kid named Don Ware who lived on Wadsworth and Bayaud just south of Peterson turkey farm. His mom forbade him to come to my house and my dad forbade me from going to your house. Late 60's early 70's, back in the dark ages... Then the Ware family moved somewhere... I don't suppose you are that Don? /Dave

Big tech offerings like Gemma, or LLaMA or Chinese-made like Deepseek/ Qwen —none are fully FOSS by definition, but they’re among the most important to me as free and open local models. Far from perfect, they’re the last line of defense against total corporate control.

problem is all the things you listed whetehr it be linux nginx apache they are all a open source reimagination of a closed source software same with kubernetes its a open source version of a internal google tool yes it grew beyond that but many big open source software of past started as someone trying to build something that they saw for themselfs and they open sourced it

also i really like the argument that missrepresents Linux foundation and in general all the missrepresenting arguments, but defenetly the linux foundation takes the cake is its so overused and no one everyone who uses it understands linux foundation and how its not just about kernel but about whole linux ecosystem

Open source under capitalism's capitilists? You can not capitalize on that which is free and why it's under attack. Everything has a charge under capitalism, everything. You pay for the well, servicing and mainthing the wells and pumps and paying for the service workers and everything involved jn the water works and yet still have to buy the water while another profits from the infrastructures that we paid for....

Fascinating video indeed. I am a computer end user using Debian GNU/Linux.
My first Linux distribution was Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat. I was so impressed with it, I trashed Windows within 2 weeks.
The following Ubuntu releases began to disappoint me. I remember it all began with the Unity desktop. So, I tried out other distros, including Debian, Manjaro, Mandriva, OpenSuse, and Linux Mint. Then, I tried Ubuntu again, but I decided to stick with Debian, which I have been using for years now.
I learned something happened at Canonical that caused many people to replace Ubuntu.
Seems to me that Canonical began not to consider end-user feedback.
Like you said, it is a corporation.

Until now there was a debate if Open Source was a good idea or not, however after the Ai revolution all the open source was used to train the Ai models and now it is clear that this was the plan all along. Now Ai replaces the same people that wrote all this code, it is just cutting down the branch you sit on literally.

I propose cooperatives make for a purpose in their bylaws instead of corporations made for only profit. Remember how the blender 3d project started? It started by the community gathering enough resources for them to open the sourcecode. A similar thing can be done for other open source.

The difference between cooperative and corporation is that each one involved get one vote regardless of shares. Thus is much harder to derail its purpose than it is with a corporation.

Is a two way problem. Developers need to eat and pay bills just as everyone else. But at the same time you do not want vital pieces of source code on the hands of corporations that will close it and take advantage of, stiffling innovation in the process.

A cooperative with clear bylaws can acomplish both. Instead of free code, code that is cheap enough for both everyone to use and developers to have a living wage.

Wow it's crazy how Corporatist thinking has just devoured the minds of people now days. I think I used to think that when I was younger, but being a developer and believing that? I dont know how they reached that thought process. Maybe the world truly has lost its passion and is only doing things solely for monetary gain.

There is no such thing as "Open Source". The term was created to trick decision makers into using "Free Software" while ignoring the ethical issues related to freedoms 0-3. The reason why your "Open Source" is under attack is directly related to the fact the users have been tricked into never learning about (and therefore not defending) the essential freedoms. All said, I'd enjoy watching the propaganda term "Open Source" go down in flames for any reason whatsoever.

As we embark on an era of dwindling scarcity, as production of goods and services is turned over to robots and AI, we need to re-think the whole system. Capitalism is outdated, and quickly becoming unworkable. I'm a retired SW engineer, and I agree wholeheartedly with your concerns. But I would expand your points to encompass all of our activities. We should be working together, no patents, everything open source, transparent, and available to all. We should all be given a monthly stipend, with a minimum level of community enriching responsibility.

None of this was possible before this; scarcity promulgates hoarding of resources by the sharks. But as we move into a a new paradigm of limitless energy and automated production, we can finally change how our society operates, from profit driven, to self expression, curiosity and research, and the synergy of working together for the good of the community.

But, in the mean time, I agree that we should make sure there is a non-profit driven scaffolding set up around opensource development, and all of us who hate corporations stepping up and funding it.

ive also noticed its a lot harder to move files from one computer to another than it was in the 90s... unless you use OneDrive or some cloud service.

We need to seriously consider blacklisting GIT and SVN from further contribs from Nvidia and their loyal fingers like redhat. The FOSS ecosystem will get swallowed by nvidias plan to make prebuilt redhat AI servers if we keep helping them get drivers running. I do not desire a paid for usually months out of date version of the linux kernel from either of them. They arent secure or hardened like they have always claimed. most linux servers that get hacked were running years out of date redhat products because they couldnt afford to pay 20k+ annual for the updates. The long term goal is kill FOSS kernel extensions and marry nvidias AI drivers to exclusively the "enterprise" kernel. if they owned linux kernel they could set the price on updates and that would be catastrophic for all types of users not just end users

Would open source maintain it's relevence if more people paid for it. I'm experimenting with linux and I am retired, but if I find it can replace windows, I would happily pay 20 to 50 bucks to developer's if I thought that would improve it. If linux started interupting me for money I might go back to windows unless linux actually worked better for me. Thanks for the post.
