(10 Dec 2019) Peace talks in Paris between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine were "positive" according to analyst Volodymyr Fesenko of the Penta centre for Political Studies in Kyiv.
At the first meeting between new Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the two leaders failed to find a compromise to bring an end to the five-year-old war which has left 14,000 people dead.
The two leaders did agree on Monday to revive the peace process and exchange all their prisoners, but they could not reach accord on crucial issues, such as a timeline on local elections and control of the borders in the rebel-held region.
Speaking on Tuesday, Fesenko said he had not expected any significant achievements from the talks, but said Zelenskiy had proved a tough negotiator.
Ukraine and Russia have already conducted several rounds of prisoner exchanges, most recently in September.
Monday's deal goes further, envisaging a blanket "all for all" exchange of all known prisoners held by Ukraine and the rebels.
Putin said that in addition to the prisoner swap, agreement was reached to continue pulling back troops in other areas in the east, clear mines there and remove fortifications.
