I’m not gonna lie it’s been awhile since I have read this book a freshman in high school and I loved it probably as an adult I will probably feel differently and when I watched I thought it was so sweet and it had a Rotten score on RT and I was so sad cause didn’t like the movies and book readers were like it’s not like book and it didn’t adapt everything. And I loved Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams. I watched the first episode of the show and didn’t finish the show cause I was biased cause of my love for the movie.

Liked this movie based on my undying love for Rachel McAdams who if I ever meet will tell her if Cillian Murphy sits next to here again on a plane and says he kidnapped your Dad Brian Cox do not indulge him but stand up and yell help which she didn't do in 2005's "Red Eye". Also...what good is being a Time Traveler if you can't eliminate evil people like Hitler as a baby or invest early in Microsoft or Apple. Yeah, the grooming stuff was creepy but I 100% percent support everything Gomez did.

It's absolutely wild how many positive representations of grooming I read as a kid. No wonder I dated a 17 year old when I was 14 (gross and traumatic)

Apparently, I've been mixing up this movie and About Time for years lol. In my defense they both include time travel and Rachel McAdams weirdly enough. It sounds like the Time Traveler's Wife movie is more aware than the book which makes sense. I'm now super curious if the tv show really does explore the concept more or not, but I don't want to watch it myself lol. Thanks for covering this, I've always heard this story was controversial with all the grooming and manipulation, but I kept getting confused because I constantly mixed it up with About Time which I believe has no grooming, maybe manipulation though, so it was just all confusing in my head and now it's not. I wonder if this type of book would be able to be published today or not?

Thank god, I'm not alone in that uncomfortable feeling when he keeps coming back to Claire. And why I liked the movie better.

Man, i could've listened to you go off on that rant all day 😂 i could feel your frustrations, which were totally justified!

I was literally cringing by the grooming points you discussed, and the fact that a lot of it was played off in some romantic lens?? Just really gross and manipulative 🤮

I love time travel stuff, and i did have my eyes on this, but i dont think i wanna invest in it anymore lol. Great review as always!

I concur 💯%! As a male who read this when I was around 29-30 years old, I too found it to be very uncomfortable and problematic.

I’ve heard several people say that the book was so much better, so I assumed that my problems with the movie weren’t in the book. Ha! Quite the opposite, it seems. Thank you for this review, it’ll save me time that would’ve been wasted on reading it. Love your channel!

Agree 100% with the book “rants”. I love time travel themes in books and movies. But this book was disappointing. Haven’t seen the movie or tv show.

Hey! I just found your channel. I'm really enjoying your backlog. 👍 By the way, I don't know if you take suggestions here, but I recently caught The Da Vinci Code movie, which was also a book, of course! I'd love to hear your take on that one. 😊

I completely agree with this entire video... There is hope that we are more sensitive to the toxicity nowadays, and are able to spot it more easily!

May I please recommend 'Under the Tuscan Sun' for a future book vs movie episode? Frances Mayes—the writer—is a really interesting figure, and the movie is truly so beautiful, wise... And so refreshingly 'female-gaze'!

The movie is very nuanced, very gentle, and has a very flowy and feminine feel to it, so mainstream audiences and, of course, the male critics, gave this movie quite the cold shoulder back in the day.

It was wonderfully led by Diane Lane, who shines through, and very intelligently directed by the late director Audrey Wells, who narrates with such subtlety and sensitivity... 'Under the Tuscan Sun' is a true gem; a beautiful and understated work of art.

Audrey Wells died of cancer a few years ago, when she was only in her late fifties. It really does break my heart that she didn't—and still doesn't—get the recognition that she deserves for her quality filmmaking.

7A looks terrible like a cross between RB and Suspiria. I mean the movie might be fine. But it's not the story as described by the victim from the original film who gets thrown to her death. Where everything with the Castavettes is going GREAT. Or commits S. Whichever it is. Since I think it's ambiguous

wow the fact you think Henry was grooming Claire means you didnt understand the story at all. Its fine not liking a book but saying hes grooming her when thats not the case is crazy to me.
Henry first meets Claire when they are both adults.

I love the idea in concept, but yes, it is extreamly prone to be very, very problematic and add the usual toxic tropes ontop making it a disaster. Funny enough, I know it from a Fanfiction and the fanfiction handles it way, way better😂 .. . .
I like complex relationships and getting to know eachother in reverse order has so much potential for amazing interactions and conflicted feelings and delicious drama, but sadly the one with the original idea wrote pretty immature

I know it's in vogue to see everything though a certain lens now...
But are you going to criticize murder mysteries, cause some character is doing bad things (killing)?
What about the movie alien(s)...I mean there is a throat raping spider in those movies!
Actually don't get me started on Alien(s)*

Okay, but TTTW:
So first of all, it’s a closed loop and neither character can change anything…
Each person is who they are because of the other, but w/out choice.
It only seems like they have free will.
Also I just don’t see how you can bring your sexual politics into this for two important reasons:
1. He doesn’t exist, and
2. The story was written by a woman, so it’s just it’s...he doesn’t exist and it’s a story invented by a woman, you should you should criticize the THE woman (author). It's like the old tale of a woman who is angry at her husband because of what he did in her dream (this stuff only ever happened in the mind of a woman!)

But all that being said, I am an old man who is a widower for the second time in his life.
I had one true love, and if I could go back in time and meet, or even just see Naida at any time in her life, I would!!

*Alien problems
1. Alien queen doesn't seem to eat, but produces 60 lb eggs every few minutes (biologically expensive!!)
2. 60 lbs egg only produces 2.5 lb mouth rape spider (waste of resources)
3. Rape spider kills 160 lb man, to transform into 2.0 lbs xenomorph! (What?)
4. Xenomorph kills but hardly eats, still turns into 200 lb monster.
5 Xenomorph slobbers all over the place (biologically expensive), but is never seen drinking...

I saw the movie when it came out in 2009 and didn’t love it, but then I watched the TV show in 2022 and liked it so I decided to read the book. The TV show only covers part 1 for the most part (because it didn’t get renewed), and it was pretty faithful, but did make small changes to make things more palatable and also is very vibe-y with the cinematography.

Your review of the book is SPOT-ON. I had all the same rants as you, down to the complaints about the lists. (Gomez & Charisse cheating storyline drove me particularly crazy). I also liked the idea of exploring this “destined” but really manipulative relationship, and reading it in the book just felt gross the entire time due to the grooming being portrayed as romantic.

I decided not to revisit the movie since I didn’t like the book, so I appreciate your video! Glad to hear that they gave her a little more agency in the movie. Because the book was so disappointing. I vaguely remembered her being annoyed with him in the movie from watching it many years ago, and was surprised that the book had none of that.

Just such a disappointing reading experience
