I tried similar tactics (sometimes with 3 at the back and one more in midfield), and it worked amazingly for my Mallorca team in the Spanish league with lots of world class high energy gegenpressing players, but managing Italy in the World Cup, it didn't work so well and we got beaten in the quarter final by Holland ; )

Using this tactics with a small club is like getting ready to be cooked.

With kids playing City and Real madrid with 3 midfielders. I rather go with 2 DM and one CM to sneak in counters with wingers and a striker.

2 CMs imo is a much better choice unless you have World class defenders because you are overloading your defense with that less players

i still use the regular and old 4-4-2, can't complain, after all i've went on two consecutive seasons without losing one game, using someone like Barella + Ilaix Moriba works perfectly, one fo distribute the ball and the other one...as..anything really defensive, box to box or just a regular center midfielder.

I use a 42112 with offset strikers and 1 defensive winger/ wide playmaker its working out very good for me

You need a really, really good DM for this to work out.

Does actually work well if you have a good team, i use 2 iwb, 2 bpd, 1 dlp (defend) 2 wingers in midfield with 3 st (2 af on L and R with your choice for middle st) but its russian roulette using it agianst a good team (champions league mostly)

I use this alot and if you would like some tips then what you need is first a good dm with high fitness and all around stats with average passing and good defending. Then what i do is use an ifb on defense and push a defender forward using libero. This means on defense youll have 3 players to cover if they get past the dm whilst also allowing build up to the attackers to be easier. 16 games in to second and season with stuttgart and currently sit 1st with a 3 point lead on bayern.

This is essentially the 2-3-5 build up like most teams irl. You can have this build up shape from other set formation with player roles tho
