Russia: Smiling Dimitrichenko denies ordering Bolshoi Theatre acid attack
Former Bolshoi ballet dancer Pavel Dmitrichenko appeared in a Moscow court on Thursday to respond to allegations of masterminding an acid attack on artistic director Sergei Filin. Smiling and defiant, Dmitrichenko denied ordering the assailant to splash sulphuric acid in Filin's face, which left the artist scarred and battling to keep his sight.
Sergei Filin was attacked on January 17 outside of his Moscow home. Until recently, the identity and motive of the attacker were unclear. However, it has since come to light that Dmitrichenko confessed to paying Yuri Zarutsky 50,000 rubles (€1,250) to 'beat him up,' althought the accused denies mentioning anything about acid.
Authorities laid out their belief that Zarutsky purchased the acid at an auto shop and boiled the acid to increase its potency. Dmitrichenko's motive was said to be related to Filin's refusal to cast Dmitrichenko's girlfriend Anzhelina Vorontsova as the lead role in the world famous play Swan Lake, which debuted in December 2012.
