Las Médulas, Northern Spain, are the largest open-pit gold mine of the Roman Empire and its landscape is an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The magnificent landscape is a result of the hydraulic mining technique employed for the extraction of gold, described by Pliny the Elder, the procurator in the region during the 1st century.
