Take your magnet from magnet fishing or from a large hardware store and use it to lift the lid of those storm drains/catch basins off. Land surveyors have a switchable magnet on a little hand cart that they use to lift manhole lids off. Even with a little leverage you'd have less trouble. Use the claw from a framing hammer or a small crowbar slid between the grates. And watch your toes!
