Orca Uses Bait To Hunt Bird

Orcas should not be caged, this video is the best example. People should be ashamed of doing this to animals.

This isn’t just a display of hunting instincts. This is a demonstration of the intellectual capacity these mammals have. They can think and find unique approaches to problems, even in captivity. It’s fucking amazing to be honest, and I do hope one day we will never see an orca in a theme park again.

She didn't just think "let me back up I am too close", it was more well thought out:

She moved forward before backing up. This meant she could back up more. Backing up put the bird at ease, as birds just judging safety using velocity as well as distance.

When it was time to attack, she started moving slowly to not intimidate the bird. Only when within striking range did she lunge at full speed.

She was definitely thinking "I need to do this, and then this, so the bird is at ease but I get in range." And yes she had the concept of "I" that most animals lack. All this from an animal in captivity living a mentally starved life.

Orcas are fascinating because they are so smart and they *aren't primates*. It is a very different intelligence than humans that will not lie on a simple scale of low to high. What can we learn from them?
