ОтветитьThe film The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) dangerously softens Edmond Dantès' transformation, turning his journey of revenge into something closer to a quest for redemption rather than a ruthless reckoning. Unlike Alexandre Dumas’ novel, which presents a protagonist consumed by suffering and who repays his pain to the world in a methodical and relentless manner, the cinematic adaptation chooses a more morally acceptable hero, diminishing his cruelty and making his revenge almost romantic.
It is unlikely that a man would easily accept his former fiancée back. In the novel, he spares Albert’s life at Mercedes’ request, but that is not something one simply forgets. It would have been far more natural for him to unleash his hatred and aggression against her rather than seek reconciliation.
Freud, in Civilization and Its Discontents, argues that man is not naturally a gentle creature but rather an aggressive being who seeks to satisfy his impulses, often in violent ways. The deep suffering Edmond endured—being betrayed by his friends and losing his freedom—should have transformed him into something closer to the "wild beast" Freud describes: a man whose revenge does not merely punish the guilty in a theatrical way but utterly destroys them, leaving no room for reconciliation or sentimentality.
However, the film attempts to preserve Edmond as a conventional hero, denying him the coldness and ruthlessness that someone in his position would naturally develop. His plan for revenge does not affect Mercedes as it should. In the novel, Edmond is a man scarred by suffering, and his transformation should have included her as part of his vengeance, since by marrying Fernand and continuing her life while Edmond rotted in prison, Mercedes also participated—albeit passively—in his downfall. Yet the film treats her as an innocent victim, sparing her from the cold and merciless judgment that Edmond should have imposed.
This approach ignores Freud’s view that instinctual passions are stronger than rational interests. In the book, Edmond is not merely a vigilante; he is a broken man who, even when surrounded by luxury and power, cannot escape the weight of his hatred. His aggression is not tamed but rather refined into a cruel method, as he understands that civilized society, with its laws and artificial morality, would never truly compensate for the harm he suffered.
The film, in contrast, presents an optimistic and conciliatory view that does not align with the brutality of Edmond’s experience. He forgives Mercedes and even allows his enemy to choose his own death, which weakens the impact of his revenge and denies the audience full catharsis. In the end, Edmond’s violence and desire for destruction are softened to make him more palatable to the audience, contradicting Freud’s idea that civilization represses our natural impulses—but they never truly disappear.
And after this adventure, Albert became the Witcher.

ОтветитьNice movie
It tells us how to live life even in dark times and make the best out of it.
In the book Edmond left with Ada, who's never shown in this movie and Mercedes left for Africa with her son who joined the military. I prefer this version more. The Morells also had a bigger role in the book I wish they would have shown all the the Count had done for them. You can't beat a movie with Superman and Jesus in it.
ОтветитьI really love this movie !!!!! ❤😊
