Final stages of Battle of Berlin *ARCHIVE*

Archive footage filmed in April-May 1945 features combats in Berlin as part of the final stage of the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation launched by the Soviet Union.

Red Army servicemen, as well as heavy weaponry, can be seen advancing toward the German capital and later participating in city fighting, assault, and seizure of the Reichstag.

According to historical records, the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation, also known as the Fall of Berlin, appeared to be one of the last major offensives of World War II, and lasted for 16 days, from April 16 to May 2, 1945.

Fightings continued to the north-west, west, and south-west of Berlin until the end of the war on May 8 (May 9 in the Soviet Union), though the city's garrison surrendered on May 2.

The Soviet Banner of Victory was raised over the Reichstag building by the Red Army soldiers on May 1, 1945, the day after Adolf Hitler committed suicide.

Soviet forces are believed to sustain 81,116 dead, while 280,251 were reportedly wounded or sick during the operation, which also included the battles of Seelow Heights and the Halbe.

Based on Soviet estimates, German forces' losses reach 458,080 killed and 479,298 captured, however, German researches put the number of dead at approximately 100,000. About 125,000 are estimated to have perished during the entire operation, though the exact number of civilian casualties is unknown.

This archive footage was released as part of the "100 key events in Russia in the 20th and 21st centuries", a joint project between Ruptly and the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive (rgakfd.ru).
