I take 2 away from 7 to make 10 out of the 8 and then plus 5 is really easy

8+8=16
15 is in the middle of 14 and 16 so 7+8=15

This seems crazy when using a simple example like 7 + 8, but when you start using it for questions like 31 * 99 it isn't so crazy. 31 * 99 = 31 * (100 - 1) = 3100 - 31 = 3069... I got that right right?... ....

You obviously do 7 + 3 and then add remaining 5

If 7 plus 8 is bot automatic for one, they didn't go to 4th grade

I’ve tried to explain this method of math to several people over the years that say they’re “not good at math” and once I do, they actually feel like they can figure stuff out better. 😅

7+7=14
8+8=16
And with one of each, they meet in the middle and we get 15.
If there's 6+8 then i subtract one from the 8 and add it to 6, so that the equation is now 7+7. Which is 14.

This is just the law of compensation, which I love. I'm always compensating for something 😅

Method 1 (+1) or Method 4 (-1) work for me. I have mild dyscalcula, but can visualize math problems. Brains are weird. 😂

I'm older then mud and I'm so happy that I'm 1st grade my mom would drill me on 1x1 up to 12x12. I vividly remember the school green card that had 1-12 down the side and across the top with all the answers in the video ,(who knew I was also learning about spreadsheets). Rote painful memorization but it seems less painful now.

Yeah, that's exactly what I just did.

But …. I can just ask the machine. It knows, it‘s fast and it doesn’t make mistakes.

My brother came home from school while I was visiting and asked me for help with his math homework. Easy enough 3rd grade addition is within my realm of expertise… or at least it was until I got to the “show your work part” and saying
8+7=15 doesn’t cut it it needed to say
10+5=15 which is the most smarteresting thing I think I’ve ever seen.

I actually picture the numbers as pieces of wood with length of the number it represents. The wood is laid on a line with sharp cutoffs every 10 units of length. So the 7 would fit inside the first length of 10, but when you try to put the length of 8 right after it, only 3 units can fit before it gets cut off. The length you'd have leftover would then be 5. So the final answer is however many full 10 lengths you filled and whatever wood scrap is leftover. So 15. Easy.

Also no, I'm not joking. Visualizing it my head is way faster than trying to explain it in words though.

No see how I do it is I think okay 8 is 2 less than 10, so 7-2 (the 2 I add to the 8 to make 10) is 5, so then you add the 5 and that makes 15. Why tf do I calculate things this way? I have no idea. I have always done it this way lol

Or you can just make it simple and just add the two numbers together 🙈 even carrying the one on some problems is a hell of a lot easier than the math that everybody’s trying to do today

i just do it the easy way. distract 7 to 5, add it to 8 so it makes 10 then at the remaining 5. no half-hour long explanation needed.

As someone who has synesthesia and is also bad at math, my method is just remembering which colour each number is and then mixing the colours gives me the answer 😅

How else would you do it??

From doing so many killer cage sudokus, I simply know that 7+8 is 15 intrinsically without having to math it out anymore.

So if I have 7 cats, and add 8 dogs, I get 15 eggs?
