Interesting interview. Let me compare this story to my own. When I was 19, there was a new operating system called Linux, only four years old at the time, being worked on by a graduate student in Finland and a few dozen volunteers. For many years I worked on Linux, not making a dime. Today Linux runs half the Internet, is the core of billions of tablets and phones, and so on. At age 50, many software engineers are millionaires. I chose happiness, and not money. I still make a good living working primarily on Linux, but I'll never be a millionaire. Happiness is priceless, and seeing people using Android all over the globe is my American dream. Ultimately, this man chose to work for the NSA. I was lightly recruited by the NSA when I was doing some work on encryption. I have nothing against government agencies that keep us safe, but if you're chasing money, women, and are constantly on high on drugs, what kind of life is that?

Fascinating interview connecting the dots from Economics classes in the early 1990s (for me) through to modern times. I've seen the maps contrasting all the countries that consider the USA to be the rest of the world's preferred trading partner vs. China, and then in 2020 - quite the opposite has happened. I've never heard the term "economic hit men", but have heard of what the US investment bankers had done, and then what China has done selling its infrastructure and security apparatus with its loans to the global south, while going after their natural resources to feed their manufacturing machine. Keep up the great work!
