Could you use slabs instead of stairs?

a word of warning. the "at least 12 blocks to ensure the staircase doesnt move" thing isnt true anymore. i built this build into the dirt beneath me and it pushed over at least 30 blocks, including the staircase itself, and proceeded to break itself into pieces in a reoccurring loop of pistons being shoved every which way. use obsidian

edit: this build is no longer functional. followed the tutorial block by block three times over now and it just pushes pistons in a circle.

I like the idea of this being used for a secret entrance
