David Carlson - Arlington Visual Art Studio Tour

My painting process is a meditation on consciousness and time. With no apparent references, I am free to experience time and thought authentically. Abstraction engages the visual language and poetic tension of gestural line, form, color, and layered surfaces along with my life experiences, conversations, dreams, and internal questions - “What if I do this?” All these parts come together as metaphors for anything and everything. This connection sets up a collision between opposing paradigms of structure and change. What we hold on to and what we let go.

This series began over a year ago with a question: “what is consciousness.” In the process I also wanted to rethink and simplify space. The concept of flattening time came out of my contemplation of juncture. With the arrival of COVID 19 and its disruption of all aspects of life and the unexpected passing of my younger sister, time and life has gained a new relevance.
