COB powertone vs COB dynasonic?

I had the deeper (61/2 inch?) in the mid 70's. Shouldn't have sold it. Still got a Ludwig 400 from the same time , though.

yup I had a Rogers snare just like that and yes I'm and older guy just like yourself. Just sold my Rogers XP-8 maple kit a few years ago was a great kit. I'll miss it I hope they take care of it like I did.

Oh Man, This resurrected "player of drums" (me) , at 73 yo, who resurrected playing drums again after 50 Years in 2019, will be watching this series with great interest. I love the sound of your drums. I gotta learn to tune them like this and learn to play at 20% of your level.

Rogers is all nostalgia....with jack shit quality. NOT a fan of anything Rogers. Rogers makes old men happy for nostalgia and nostalgia alone.....

The Ludwig sounds angrier and the Rogers sounds smoother. Yeah, the Dynasonic is a bit quieter than the Ludwig, but I like the tone of it better.

Hi Rick, I have a COB Dynasonic 14x6.5 that I originally purchased new about 1971. I was playing full-time and traveling back then but the drum held up surprisingly well. It didn’t get the love it does now, as it traveled in the trip case snare compartment with nearly no padding. It of course has the oval badge and five lines. Also, the snare bar adjustment screw on this one is pretty easy to get to because it doesn’t have the “hole’ to go through (only an arch) and the screw head is slotted. Back in the day I used it for almost everything but always appreciated the crisp sensitivity of this drum.

The Supra Phonic sounds and feel great as most drummers know but I hear a delicate and warm quality in the Dyna Sonic that is unique.

Are you doing the wood Dynasonic as well.
Which do you prefer..?
I preferred the Ludwig COB here..

Really great video, Rick! Very informative. Thus I don't agree with some of your statements.

What's the point of trying to find out, which of the two snares is "better"? Drumming ist never about gear. It is about the music and the sound. There are many many songs that need a dry, clean, less cracky, less aggressive sound. In those cases the Dynasonic fits so much better than the Ludwig, and there is no way to tune any Ludwig in a similar manner so that it could compete with the Rogers. And, on the other hand, there are songs or type of music where that Ludwig sound fits better.

There is no better or worse snare IMHO. Choose the right snare for the job.

I have none of these technical issues with my Dynasonic, but mine is older (1973) with script logo, and I bought a brand new rail. The Dynasonic is a tank and indestructible.

Thank you for your videos, all of them are very interesting. This last one, in particular, is even more so for me since I have a Dynasonic. The only downside is that it doesn’t have the option to enable subtitles, which would help me better understand with my limited English skills. Is it possible to enable subtitles?

I have the earlier version in mint condition but I did change out the snare device. But I’m not selling it. I too have the Ludwig but I’m not selling that either. Collecting snare drums is more than a hobby, it’s a disease🥴

As this came up I wax searching for ways to tune & set up & get the most out my dyna I bought cheap in almost mint condition. Transition model ( Big R & Script Rogers logos ) Thx 🙏 for you video 👏 . The Ludwig does have more cut & bang but the dyna is pretty good . I thought I could tune mine higher without chocking with 🦘 head s batter but . ..Maybe get a Ludwig or similar down the track or dump the rail . Have to get the right snares re low snare beds .Stick chopper hoops ?. Who knows . Brilliant playing btw . A friend has a similar cob Ludwig ( total kit open tuning too ) even big rock shows amazing 😎

Rick, I've had that snare the Rogers dyna-sonic for many years as it still is my work horse for me. It has great projection, and I've learned to handle it's over ring with "Zero Rings" on the head. That bar at the bottom has the abilities to have a "Tight" sound, in my eyes one of the better drums ever made. Also, if you notice on the Rodgers drums, shells toms, bass drum etc. They had on the inside a permanent 1" 1/4" wood ring on both sides of the drum shells. A unique feature you don't find on these newer drums made today. I had a Holiday set with silver sparkle at one time. Rodgers drums were at the time were very well-made drums in the 70's they were sought after until they changed to that lame tube style hardware in my humble opinion. Thank you for your video's which I'm still visiting and learning. Don't worry about your age, you're still a young man! and great drummer with lots of class and style.

The Rogers sounded better to me….especially the rim shots

I’ve always loved my dynasonics. Had a COB one in the mid-60s and recently bought a reissued one in wood. The problems you had with yours, well I’ve never had. But neither of mine were the Big R vintage so the metal rail screw cover was open on the bottom and the screw was easily accessible. My rail screws have always stayed put and the snares never rattled when I turned the strainer off. All that said, it was great hearing you play your dynasonic.

I bought a new Rogers Dynasonic wood drum (one of the new ones) a few years ago. Plays jazz with it, and is actually quite satisfied. But thinking of buying a Gretch snare drum for the collection, as the rest of my drum kit is Gretsch. Thanks for good and informative videos :D

Have you ever worked with either fiberglass or carbon fiber shell drums? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

I bought mine in 1963, used with Ludwig set just like yours except my bass drum was 18 inch, and had a rail system for my small Tom,still play them at gigs, I have other kits.Yamaha ,African America a localbuilder

I hated my dynasonic because it didn't have the rail system when I got it, couldn't get the snare from rattling. My prother used a pall peen hammer and gently made snare beds. Fixed!
Now I like the drum. Chrome over brass.
