Honestly, I never understood what Sean was even doing there. Here's how me and other folks (be it fans or just other people who part took in discussions while watching their performances on TV) saw it:

J and Abz - They were the band's leads and main flagman faces of it hands down. All their iconic songs that imho characterized their group had these two as lead performers. Without them its like a tree without its roots.
Rich and Scott - Good supporting vocalists and also their "pretty boy" type of looks have drawn in a lot of teenage school girl type of audience, which is always good for popularity and sales of merch.
Sean - You could say that a "quite and timid" type can provide good balance, but it would have maybe worked if he was at least good looking and if his low notes singing was actually really good. I cannot see how there was no other member at a time who could have filled in similar role, but just done it way better. Not to mention that he is always trying to find reasons to be a typical victim little brat and acting all beta, which is just annoying and embarrassing. I have also never met a single girl at a time when Five were around and I was at school who legit fancied Sean or wanted to either have his own poster, doll, pc desktop wallpaper or anything else of sort.

So to conclude, I would have rather it been J instead of Sean if I had to choose. Also, Kerry from Atomic Kitten would have probably had her uterus explode if Jason was there and it would have been hilarious to watch her drooling over him XD
