AP Environmental (Food Production). How much of the Earth do we use to produce food?

You are one of a few billion people lounging on a small rock orbiting a star. Your particular species lives a life based on the consumption of food. For the next sixty seconds, for all intents and purposes, this will represent your planet.

Right off the bat, three quarters of your planet is virtually useless in day to day life.

You now have one quarter. Half of THAT is easy to ignore. That's the land you don't live or work on, like deserts or high mountains.

We can take the remaining eighth and divide that into four sections.
Three of those pieces are where your own species lives. These are your cities, factories, roads and parking lots. The soil on this region of the earth is so depleted that crops don't stand a chance.

We have one thirty second of the globe left, at an average depth of five feet. This is the entire farmable topsoil of the earth. The several billion people on that small rock orbiting a star live, work and die based on how wisely this five feet of topsoil is used.
