A Twin-Peaks like mystery. An open-world game before open-world games were a thing. This is Mizzurna Falls, a late 1998 release for the Playstation 1. A game exploring uncharted territory with its open-world approach.

It's a case of the developers ambitions punching well above their weight class. It's full of jank and frustration, held together by duct tape. Yet there's something special found within. The most obvious comparison is to Deadly Premonition.

Even then, it takes a far different approach to its David Lynch influences and its gameplay. Where Deadly Premonition leans into the absurd, Mizzurna Falls explores the darker undercurrents hiding beneath the surface of this small Colorado town.

What adds to the mystique of Mizzurna Falls is that it never saw a release outside of Japan. But thanks to the hard work of dedicated fans, would receive translations a couple of decades later.

To be clear - by no means is Mizzurna Falls a great game. Its many frustrations hold it back from greatness. But it's a one-of-a-kind title. The twists, the turns, and the intrigue of the story drive it forward. It's a fascinating glimpse into the early days of open-world games before best practices emerged. And if you're a fan of the works of David Lynch, it's unique Japanese interpretation pays excellent homage while being its own thing.
